Why are child killers let out of prison so early?

But if you take a gun and shoot at a police officer you will be given 30 years straight with no chance of early release even though nobody was injured or even died?

James Bulger killers were given 8 years in a luxury hostel type of place, they didn't even go to a proper jail. The people who killed Baby P are all out aren't they? Or they didn't get very long sentences. There are many many other cases where someone has battered or abused a baby and killed a child and they are given 6-8 year sentences, but yet firing at police during a riot will get you a life sentence?

The only people who seem to go to prison for years and years for harming children are famous cases such as the moors murders or the West murders, or serial killers. Why are baby killers given such lenient punishment but anybody who does anything that involves targeting police is hit with a severe sentence? I mean there are people in prison for like 15 years for gang shootings where there was no injured party, yet people are murdering innocent children and are out in 3 years?
oh i thought you meant killers of children not killers that are children
