Re: The TSR Jewish Society (J-Soc) - thread TWOHe and my mum discussed it a lot (apparently, I was never aware) and sometimes he was really keen for it, other times less so.(Original post by lovely_me)
Why is your Dad converting?
My mum passed away 2 and a half years ago and the community at our synagogue was a support network for my dad, as well as already having great friends there he felt completely supported through her illness to the end. I think even now he just feels very connected to the community there.
Also, by non-Jewish I really mean he has no religion at all - also I think he's agnostic - so it's not like he's abandoning another religion, he just feels realy drawn towards the community at the synagogue and some of the traditions. -
Re: The TSR Jewish Society (J-Soc) - thread TWOYou're not allowed to eat Halal meat though, right? Why's that?(Original post by Rhadamanthus)
This is true. The prohibition of Jews entering Churches but not Mosques has to do with the fact that Judaism and Christianity have little in common. Judaism has more in common with Islam, as seen by the influence of the Sufists on the Kabbalah, given that the two are both religions which affirm a single, indivisible G-d with no tolerance for idolatry. -
Re: The TSR Jewish Society (J-Soc) - thread TWOHalal and Kosher rituals are almost but not quite the same.(Original post by AkaJetson)
You're not allowed to eat Halal meat though, right? Why's that?
There is a 'box' area on the animals neck that is the right place to cut - if it's not cut in there it is not pure. The Halal 'box' is bigger than the Kosher one (which is inside the same area) so if an animal is killed in a Kosher manner, the animal was killed within the Halal 'box' as well. But if the animal was killed in the Halal manner, the cut may not be in the Kosher 'box' - so there is a chance that it is not Kosher.
Also I imagine there are different prayers. -
Re: The TSR Jewish Society (J-Soc) - thread TWOI'll give you an example. A Halal chicken doused in cream would, to a Muslim, be Halal. Yet Jews forbid the mixing of meat and dairy so this would not be kosher. The blessings are also different as are the methods of doing the slaughtering (to the best of my knowledge).(Original post by AkaJetson)

Re: The TSR Jewish Society (J-Soc) - thread TWOI knew about the milk thing, I should've been more clear but was talking about things like chicken by itself. Ponderous gave me my answer anyway(Original post by Rhadamanthus)

Re: The TSR Jewish Society (J-Soc) - thread TWO
I'm not sure about Nottingham, but Birmingham and Leeds have quite large JSocs.
I don't know about the actual size of them, but Birmingham is known as a 'Jewniversity' - you can go and ONLY socialise with Jews and still have a really really full social life. So I imagine it's quite big there.
I think Leeds is fairly big as I know about 3 or 4 people who are in the JSoc at Leeds who go to my synagogue and they always seem quite busy.
As for Warwick, it's where they hold the Limmud Conference over Christmas, so I think it has a university it does have quite a large Jewish population. I certainly know a couple of people in the JSoc there. -

Re: The TSR Jewish Society (J-Soc) - thread TWOI know a few people at Leeds, the JSoc there seems to be pretty big. Based on Googling Warwick seems to have a combined Jewish/Israeli society; I know one Jewish guy there but have no idea how active the stuff is.(Original post by jooj)
Hi everyone
I was just wondering if anone knows the comparative size of the Warwick JSOC as opposed to Nottingham/Bham/Leeds.
Please let me know if I have posted this in the wrong place, but thank you any one that can help
Limmud doesn't really have any connection with the student population, though; it's just a convenient location/size. Certainly the Warwick students I know don't know anything about it, generally.(Original post by Ponderous)

Re: The TSR Jewish Society (J-Soc) - thread TWOHello everyone!
My upmost apologies for being extremely inactive on this thread, I took a break from TSR due to other things, but now I'm back (I think) and ready to put the pro back into procrastinate.
Send me a PM if you would like to be put into the member's list on the front page, plus whether you are a Jewish member or Honorary Non-Jewish member!
Cheers! -
Re: The TSR Jewish Society (J-Soc) - thread TWOTehFrance, leader of TSR Jews.(Original post by tehFrance)
It isn't just orthodox Jews though, many non-orthodox people write G-d as well G-d... I guess it comes down to the person not the branch of Judaism?

Do you live in France or are you just French? And how religious are you?

I was born and used to live in France, see here for more.

Re: The TSR Jewish Society (J-Soc) - thread TWOI know a little Ivrit(Hebrew) been learning it for for a good four years when you say practice do you mean speaking it together or practising online(Original post by Lamb.Bhuna)
Is there anyone who would be generous enough to practice a little Hebrew with me occasionally. I started learning it, but I have no one to practice with! -

I mean practising having conversations. Mind you, if you have been practising fo four years, your Hebrew is going to be a million times better than mine. My Hebrew is not that advanced.
