In keeping with the new trend I thought I'd wave the flag for St John's! Let's start by getting together a list of members who are at St John's, post in here and I'll add you to the list!
Current students of St John's
Agrippina - Classical Archaeology and Ancient History, 1st year
Patrick7777 - Classical Archaeology and Ancient History, 1st year
Kizer - PPE, 1st year
raven100 - History and Economics, 1st year
I'm really looking forward to the music life at st johns but I was wondering how the choir works. My dad insisted we bought the CD, and it seemed to suggest that it was possible to be part of it without being an actual choral scholar.
Could anyone fill me in on the details and maybe a bit about music at st johns in general.
Thanks!
Will

yeah, you can be a member of the choir without being a choral scholar, but you do have to audition for it (hence I'm not a member! ). There's also an orchestra, joint with St Anne's, which is non-auditioning. Would have been a member of that but I'm in another choir on that night, the Oxford Student Chorus - which you should come and try out (I'm the manager!)!
Wow, if you're the manager of the other choir but couldn't get into the st johns choir, how good do you need to be!? I've been singing for a while and I'm got grade 8 distinction, would that even be good enough?

You don't need to be good at singing to be the manager of a choir!
I couldn't say tbh - but Grade 8 distinction I would imagine would suffice!
Does anyone know how the bursary system for music lessons works at Oxford. I saw that they give 5 music bursaries a year, does this mean full lessons paid for by the college for a full year or all three years.
Also, do they normally go to the music students, or is there a chance that a non-music student might have a chance of getting a bursary, as I'd like very much to try!!
Thanks!
Any chance of persuading any of you current St Johns peeps to add yourselves to the main Current Students list thing. St Johns isn't represented. The honour of your college is lacking and all that

I think you just get a bit of money to go towards music lessons and I'd imagine you'd have to audition for it. A friend who does physics got one this year so you don't have to be a music student, just someone who makes a significant contribution to the Oxford music scene I think.
And I shall add myself to the list of current students, sure
I'm pretty excited about formals, and I have a huge list of people who want to come to one, so I was wondering if anyone could tell me a bit about them-how many people you can invite, how many there are a term, what the food is like, if they're good fun, just anything you think might be interesting!
thanks

Formal hall is a three course meal where you have to wear a gown but it doesn't matter what you wear underneath it. You get waiter service and nice silver candlesticks and stuff and it only costs about £3! I believe you can invite 5 people and we have formal hall every night except Saturday night. I only went to two last term but you can obviously go to as many as you want. The food is generally pretty good, and there's a nice atmosphere - particularly on Sunday nights when the choir sings grace.
Edit: oh and the Fellows sit at high table and look awesome in their long, sweeping gowns! It's about as close to Harry Potter as it's possible to get... though the food doesn't magically appear out of no-where on the table and there are no ghosts swooping round and no enchanted ceiling, but that's about it!
Don’t forget though, we have the old guy who serves the wine, he’s been here for about 60 years I think, apparently very knowledgeable about that which he serves also
