Instead of revising today, I was browsing round random sites, and I saw on the Merton page that there's some whole winter ball thing based around Narnia and stuff. Are any tickets kept for freshers? It'd suck if none of the new people were able to get tickets, and since I'm having a year abroad for my 2nd I'd have to wait until third year to go. What is the whole "commemoration ball" thing? How are they different to ordinary balls? I think the whole thing kind of confusing. -

I think I remember talking to you during interviews, when I was in the helpers' little office before an interview. I remember saying to one girl "all the maths and science people are coming soon, I wonder if they'll be as sociable. What subject do you do?" "Maths." Whoops... -

Re: Merton College (marvellous Merton ) ThreadMerton only has a Ball every three years, not every year. It is one of the few colleges that has a Winter Ball rather than one in Trinity - this trinity there have been 8 balls at least - so it should be good :-) Commemoration Balls happen in the 9th week of Trinity term, this year it is the turn of New College.(Original post by burntgorilla)

There will be tickets available for freshers, infact there should be invitations in your freshers packs. Each member of the university can bring up to 4 friends so it is possible for people to have guests from school and family, although all guests must be over 18.

I was just wondering though, I have friends at uni in cardiff and bristol and I sometimes go out at the weekends with them then just sleep on their floor in halls. Can you do this in Oxford, say if my boyfriend came up for a night would he be able to sleep in my room? hope so, i'm guessing hotels are expensive in Oxford!
Excited but slightly scared about the whole oxford thing, i read in some uni guide that Mertonians are "dull and rarely seen on the social scene" PLEASE say this isnt true!xx -

Re: Merton College (marvellous Merton ) ThreadThere's always some truth in stereotypes, but hardly ever universal truth. I'd imagine there are people who are perceived to be dull at Merton, perhaps a slightly higher proportion than at other colleges (hence forming the stereotype), but the majority are probably normal, lively, social students! To quote the oxford handbook website (not necessarily a reliable source, but hey...) 'Of the Merton stereotype of dull, insular, hardworking students, only the latter could be said to be true. An intimidating academic reputation hides the true Merton – a small, friendly and close-knit College with a fantastic social life that is a truly memorable place in which to live and work.'. So all is OK!
Remember, even if everyone is dull (which they won't be...), you could still break the mould!

Re: Merton College (marvellous Merton ) ThreadAt interviews everyone seemed friendly and sociable, so I wouldn't put too much faith in the stereotype. And if we are worked harder than at other colleges, it'll just mean we'll have to put more effort into doing all the fun things as well.

Other people sleeping in your room is fine. Well, officially against College regulations, but they're never going to find out, unless your scout comes in in the morning and is the petty type. I have never, however, heard of anyone getting into trouble for this.
I have a girlfriend at another college, and she's stayed at mine (and I at hers) many times, so I wouldn't worry.
A side note - if you have people coming up to stay who can't/won't stay in your room, there is a special guest room in College you can book at just £17.50 a night (in contrast to the £175 a night charged by most hotels around Merton). Just make sure you book it well in advance, as it is in high demand. -

Re: Merton College (marvellous Merton ) ThreadPreviously, the Merton Street houses have been only guys, and there have been a few guys in Rose Lane, all on the same floor. Most of Rose Lane, however, is girls. There are no mixed floors.
At least, that's how it's been so far. As I said, your year is the first they're mixing properly, so I'm not entirely sure, but floors will probably get mixed as well.
The only restriction I've heard is that they're not going to put girls on the ground floor of Merton Street, for their safety. -

Should I expect anything before results day? Because so far I've heard nothing since they sent the offer and I firmed it.
I know the colleges do things differently, but a friend who got an offer from another college...can't remember which, sorry...got letters about accomodation and things ages ago. -
