question 3b why couldn't you say
e.g. R by day smaller than R at night
or that r increases from the day to the night (which is what I would have said)

The question asked 'how it changes during the day compared with how it changes at night', not 'how it changes from day to night'.

An analogy I can come up with is: Say you have $0 in your bank account. If someone gave you $100, then your account would change dramatically. However if you had $1,000,000,000 then the $100 given is only a very small change. Still, in both cases your account will increase.
