Government puts forward proposals for ID-based age checks being needed to access porn

'The Independent'
Britain is at the cutting-edge of censorship, it has been claimed, as government plans to implement ID-based age checks for pornography websites gather pace.

A scheme put forward by the porn industry would see users forced to verify their identity using banks, credit reference agencies or even the NHS, a move they were forced into by the Conservatives, for whom a law demanding age checks for online adult content is a key pledge.

"This is cutting-edge censorship," Myles Jackman, a lawyer specialising in obscenity law, told The Guardian. "We are now becoming the world leaders in censorship. And we are being watched very closely from abroad."

Not only have the draconian proposals been blasted for censorship, they also pose privacy concerns.

The plan is for checks to pass through an "anonymising hub" that removes identification in both directions on the request, meaning that in theory only the fact that the user is over 18 is out there, but there are always weak points in such systems.

"We know that privacy in such cases is often breached by accident, by hackers, or secretly by the police and intelligence services," said Jerry Barnett, a free-speech campaigner and author of the Sex & Censorship blog. "This is the state, yet again, intervening in people's private lives for no reason other than good old British prurience and control-freakery."

Censorship seems to be an ever-increasingly prominent reality under the Tories. Not only do internet providers have to automatically block adult sites unless specified otherwise, but now potentially this in the future. I would say this is definitely one step too far. What do you guys think?
Everyone knew it wouldn't be long before Dave was back on the warpath against porn again. What do I think? Disgusted, but not surprised.
Would be interesting to see how things would end up working, will this only impact UK based sites, or do foreign based ones have to comply? Is this only for paid sites, or does every random free site have to do this, which they would unlikely have the resources to do. Is this going to apply to sites which can contain pornographic content but are not explicitly porn sites (various image boards).

Again how will the government exactly define porn?

The whole attempted censorship of sexual expression disgusts me. Pornography is a concern, but censorship will just do more harm than good. What about starting at the beginning and giving children and young people education about healthy relationships?

People will find a way around this. It's simply a game of cat and mouse. I mean they attempted to block The Pirate Bay and see how well that turned out. The war against porn and piracy is doomed from the start.

A very good point. What about various image boards and communities like Tumblr and Reddit? Often enough the government and a lot of people who want to censor porn just define any website with a naked woman on it as porn.

I don't see any infringement on personal liberty(whatever that is) to be honest- you can easily choose to see it as tougher reinforcement of existing laws(i.e. needing to be 18 for adult-content viewership).

Personally, I think this is great :h:. Anything that restrains hyper-sexualisation ought to be welcomed.

The age of consent is 16 though, so it is ridiculous to have a law that you need to be 18 to watch porn when you can have it at 16. Plus nobody has ever not watched a film just because it was rated 16+ or 18+ or whatever. It is just silly.
most of us cant get pum on our own merit so we use dem tings, they're takin the piss

Raise the age of consent to 18 then.

It isn't particularly silly. Most 16 year olds, myself included looking back, wreent mature enough at 16.

There's a huge difference experimenting at 16 rather than getting involved in BDSM.

As has been said before, this is just reinforcing existing laws.

If you're that bothered go down your local cinema and start complaining about age restrictions there first rather than your right to watch Bukakke or spit roasts.

If your not mature enough to ask the bill payers permission to access these sites you're not mature enough to be watching them.

 Those westminster types already struggle with the current age of consent, why would they want to raise it.

Because the recognised age of adulthood is 18.

Thing is I think this site forbids sexual imagery being posted, but not all forums do, or at least they may forbid intercourse/sexual acts, but naked women/men posing suggestively is allowed to be posted in 18+ sections of some sites.Do they suddenly become porn sites? It's technically softcore.

They also run into the same issue that they do with pirating, in that if they make this so wide ranging that even free porn sites must comply, which they won't as they're hardly going to make a special case with added workload for UK citizens, then if they're going to go to the effort to force ISP's to block all free porn sites which won't comply it'll be a daily battle as thousands of sites are created all the time.

I guess that answers the question of why the porn industry are so keen on it.
Porn destroys lives

Makes people interested more in sex than real relationships

I was watching a program on C4 about it, some porn addicts when on a porn shoot and saw that it was really like.

It won't work. It will fail. People will still be able to access porn like they normally do. The UK government will not win this battle.

The porn industry are behind the times. I don't feel sorry for them. Why would anyone pay what a lot of sites request when you can get it for free? The porn industry put themselves in the **** they're in. Is there a porn version of Netflix even? That's the only way forward i can think of.
