Trying to calculate ratios of recipe

For the purpose of this example lets say I have two ingredients:

1. water (100%)
2. a chocolate mix (80% chocolate, 20% water)

The goal is to mix them together to create a mix that is exactly 50% water and 50% chocolate.

How can I calculate exactly how much water i should add to the mix?

Hi pmatts

50% water and 50% chocolate represents the same amount of each ingredient.

Currently, you have amounts representing 80% chocolate and 20% water. That is a 4 : 1 ratio. You need to achieve a 4 : 4 ratio for 50% of each, so you need to add three parts of water. As 1 part corresponds to 20%, you need to add 3 x 20%, i.e. another 60% of water.
