The Student Room Group

Announcement about the moderation role

Hi to all the TSR community members!

The Community Team would like to share some news with you- it is a really exciting announcement around the new focus of the moderation team here on TSR.

With all the skills and life experience that the mod team bring to the forums, it has been felt that the role could be shaped to be more reflective of these benefits so that their role in supporting and advising students is a priority.

As part of this development of the mod role, the TSR Group has decided to bring some of the moderation process, such as reports, into the community team to free up the time of the volunteer team. This will allow volunteers more time to have a stronger presence in the forums, work closer with the community and use improved tools to flag rule breaking content to help us create even friendlier forums.

If you have a question or an issue around moderation, you should direct it to a community team member in the new Ask the Community Team forum- this will work in the exact same way as Ask a Moderator, it just has a new name!

Our volunteer team will now be able to focus on making the forums even more helpful, enjoyable and friendly for the community- as part of this the mods will have more time to be:

· Using their specialist knowledge of their forum subject to aid and support members of the community

· Producing helpful study threads such as Usy’s exam support thread and starting interesting and informative discussion such as Reluire’s BBC Question Time thread

· Creating an environment in which the community can grow, building friendships and producing amazing knowledge sharing

· Guiding members around the forums, helping new members to navigate and use the forums and signposting members to help them find what they need

· Continuing to create and implement community projects such as with the Political Party Contest, WinItWednesdays and A-Level Results Day support

The Community Team will be managing the reports submitted by members and issuing warning cards, bans and responding to queries in the Ask the Community Team forum.

For those of you interested in joining the mod team, a new description of what the role will involve can be found here (this opportunity is now open to members 16+ with the exception of Health & Relationships): http://www.thestudentroom.co.uk/showthread.php?t=3340701

If you have any questions please post them below and we will answer throughout the day.

Thanks!
The CT

This will be interesting. :yep: Maybe a change for the better.

Question- Will mods still do some raditional mod activates? Or was that removed? Or just only when needed? :curious:

Do you mean using basic tools such as locking threads, moving threads etc? We can still do that to help manage the community.

Ahh good. Was wondering how CT would be able to cope with such a lively and active forum else.
So basically the community team and moderators are swapping roles. What is happening to the SLs? Surely there aren't enough CT members to take on all the former mod responsibilities?
So what are the moderation team going to be called now that they're not moderating anything?

SLs are still doing what they've always done, helping manage their mod teams, giving advice and doing the job of section mods of creating content and trying to help their section

How can a job done by 60+ people be taken over by a team of 8 Of you?
Is this why everything's gone to **** lately? :erm:

Not that we are aware of  And also, without going into too much detail there were only about 8/9 mods doing the majurity of the work regarding moderation. So actually having 8 CT members just focus on admin isn't as bad as it seems

As well CT have their full day to do it, whereas we as volunteers were trying to fit it in around uni work/real life jobs etc. etc.

I don't understand what you mean, only 8/9 mods were active? I find that hard to believe. I thought the CT were based at the Brighton office, does this means TSR will only be moderated in office hours?
