I put down hot ethanolic conditions, but put NaOH as the reagent, not sure if that counts, i did say the OH- will act as a base. Formed 2-methylbut-1-ene and 2-methylbut-2-ene?
Reply 2
yep NaOH was right, with reflux and ethanol..
Reply 3
reflux?, it was just hot ethanloic right.

wow! I got so stumped on the very last question. After doing so well on every other question that the exam paper had, I come across this eight marker one and Im there...... sitting looking at my paper not knowing what to do.

I think I put alcoholic KOH, :s-smilie: with a phosphoric catalyst! Don't ask!!

But people are saying that NaOH was correct. Is KOH correct?

KOH is perfectly fine. what do you lot think will be the grade boundaries?

I feel dumb! But at least it will be one mark out of eight. Hopefully Ill get a C

Other questions I was a bit unsure on was how do petrol engines form S02? It was something like that.......... and the other one was name a SOLID pollutant formed by the petrol engine?
Reply 7
is that becos fractions come from fractinal distiallation and they contain sulphur. the solid product was carbon.
Reply 8
I put that for the first one.

For the second one it I think it was pentane is combusted. Name one solid pollutant.

I put unburned hydrocarbons.

Oh well! It was only one mark.
Reply 9
yer unbruned hydrocarbons is also right.
Reply 10
Really?

So you must have done well on the test then.
Reply 11
unfortuantely seth i blew the balancing question so i doubt it man.
Reply 12
Unburnt hydrocarbons or Carbon, you can have either...depending on how harsh the mark scheme is they might only allow one. I put sulphur is combusted thus combines with oxygen, and that it forms acid rain, as to why it is a pollutant, think u can have that its toxic/posionous for that, again, depending on the markscheme

Altogether, I'd say that the balancing questions were a total of five marks.

You can still obviously do well.
Reply 14
well I put SO2 +H20 >> H2SO3 acid rain, harms environment.

carbon; graphite

didnt it say which solid element though so unburnt hydrocarbons dont work.

KOH is right but not with a phosphoric catalyst (well not particularly sure)

NaOH with ethanol, reflux >>NaOH acts as a base >> elimination reaction

what was isomer a and b?, was a but-1-ene and b but-2-ene?
Reply 16
a but-1-ene, b 2-methylprop1-ene, c trans but-2-ene, d cis but-2-ene
Reply 17
the question did ask for what A and B were right?
Reply 18
yep
Reply 19
Phew, i managed a mark then lol.
