i applied to Castle..and whilst at Oxford i kept hearing "yea..i was rejected from Durham last year..well obvs tbh..i applied to Castle which is the most oversubscribed..."

we wont be rejected on purely the basis of # of places @ Castle?
No, only the dept accepts or rejects you. The college you apply to DOES NOT AFFECT YOUR CHANCES OF BEING ACCEPTED TO DURHAM.

exactly. the earlier you get sent to college, the more chance the college will have a place and accept you. Castle may have 15 applicants per place, but maybe only 3 may be accepted by the department, so you're actually competiting for a place at the college with a much smaller number of people (and this is all after you know you're at a college somewhere in durham)

But wat if no college will accpet u or does the system take that into account so that there only enough offers for the places at the colleges?

A college will accept you if the department accepts you.

Not necessarily. Durham track shows "passed on to college" even if you've been declined.

The big thread of "am I in" questions about Track status
Should I get ready for a rejection? If the college hasn't got it yet i must be borderline/unsuccessful i reckon. What position are you in atm? Also does anyone know when most offers were sent out last year?

    the department gets the application.

if they say yes then they will send your application to college who decide whether to give you place:

if they have room --> you get offer from them.

if they dont have room--> you get offer from some one else (collage)

Applied for English, Collingwood College. Sent it off on 11th Oct or something (for Oxford dealine). Was unsuccessful with that and now worried that Durham will reject me too. Unplanned gap year here i come...

-Actually i've an offer from york and i know that's a great uni so could still go there.

I didn't get an offer till late February last year, and I don't think Track changed till last minute. But the year before I got an offer in November. When you get an offer says nothing about the kind of candidate you are.

I really wish Durham would get rid of Track. It's so rubbish and just confuses/agitates everybody.

I'd pay more attention to your UCAS letters and UCAS track if I were you, I don't trust that thing. I didn't hear until mid-Feb last year so panic not!

Yeah, time means nothing in terms of applications. My mate got his Law offer from Durham one week before the replying deadline (May or something?).

I know it's frustrating, but chill and check out York's website or something; it's a fantastic uni!!!! It'll make you less bothered about Durham. After my Durham offer, I couldn't care less about... oh bugger, what's that uni again? Oh yeah, Cambridge .

And btw, good luck with Durham! Their English dept. is number 2, right?

Durham track is rubbish and doesn't really indicate anything that UCAS track won't tell you(and UCAS track is more reliable I think).

Well I know that in 2005 it was rated no1 (i.e. better than Oxbridge) so I definately want to go.

Really, forever lost? Alot are rejected in Dec if they're definately not good enough; so i'm obviously being considered, i'm just not a 100%, novel-writing dead-cert so haven't been given an offer straight away. That's what i'm thinking now anyway.

    How do you mean you're not a "novel-writing dead-cert"?
I haven't heard yet either for history and english - and track (though i try to ignore it) has not moved to college.
i haven't heard of anyone who is pre-exams getting an offer for english & it's pretty popular in my school...
I guess we should just try not to worry - no point really.

I thought this as well, but then my friend who is much better at English than I am (and has had perfect grades since GCSE) was rejected in December before she got an offer from Magdalen. I'm sure I'll be rejected from Durham, but I can't quite place what they're judging on. I suppose it doesn't help to over-analyse these things - we'll find out when we find out.
