Volunteering and Work Experience

I am planning on applying for the course, Business and Finance next year at a few universities throughout Scotland although I don't have a lot to put on my personal statement/application. Does anyone have suggestions where I could volunteer or know of any businesses which do work experience? Or any other things universities are looking for when applying for a business course?
P.S. Having a job in S5 is that recommend when I am doing all Higher's?
