Re: The Warwick Accommodation ThreadLocation wise, any accommodation on main campus is pretty well situated, but there are a couple which are very well situated (I'd say Tocil and Whitefields are better situated than Rootes, at least if you study Maths/CS). On average, Rootes is obviously the most sociable, and then I'd say Tocil and then Whitefields. The issue with Whitefields is that it is a group of 17, 12 person flats which are completely separate - the variety of people you will see on a daily basis is less than in corridors.(Original post by mlleflorence)
Is Rootes/Whitefields/Tocil a good combination speaking of social life and distance to the SU and everything else?
Of course, you could end up with the 11 best people you could ever live with in Whitefields or an atrocious corridor in Rootes, but the views above are just taken on the whole. [Of course, if your corridor is rubbish in Rootes, there are at least 10 more corridors you can go to, unless you end up in International House] -

Re: The Warwick Accommodation ThreadGood thing about Cryfield is that it is cheap. You save over £1000 on most other accommodations. Bad thing is that the rooms are much smaller - you get what you pay for.(Original post by 03dowerl)
I think I'm going to pick
1) JM
2) Rootes
But i'm not sure about my 3rd choice.
I'm quite a lively person who can't wait to 'get stuck in' and meet loads of people, but I do like my privacy (and a little bit of piece and quiet at times!)
I'm going to be studying law, so I would like to be close to the Social Sciences department.
I'm thinking of either Cryfield or Tocil.
What does everyone else think?
Has anyone got any more photos/information of either one of these accommodation blocks and the types of people who chose to live there?
Thanks
Tocil is more spacious, still sharing, better placed overall. The way it is designed makes it a great place to have a house party. -
Re: The Warwick Accommodation Thread
I seem to be tied between choosing Heronbank or Lakeside. Any notable differences besides the phone?
Also what does "Some same sex areas" thingy mean in the website? Does it mean I get to choose between a single sex flat/block and a mixed one? I did not yet apply, just researching, so sorry if this is indicated in the form.
Also how far are they from TESCO and from the Engineering department? -
Re: The Warwick Accommodation Thread
Hi, could anyone tell me how social Cryfield is? And is there generally a good mix of people? (I read in the thread that there's a lot of 'maths/life sciences people'.)
Also, the thread guide says there are bath/shower combos but the official accomodation guide says there aren't... which is correct? -

Re: The Warwick Accommodation ThreadHB and LS are pretty much the same - built around the same time about 10 years ago and have the familiar 8 to a flat structure that the university has adopted (since the 90s) along with Claycroft and new residences Bluebell Views.(Original post by mahfood1990)

Same sex areas are when everyone assigned to the flat/kitchen is of the same sex. There are comparatively few same sex areas compared to the mixed sex areas.
With regards to distance, see this map - both are the furthest away from Tesco and Engineering is about 10-15 minutes walk away. Please also read the guide on page one of this thread if you haven't already and it should hopefully answer a lot of questions. -

Re: The Warwick Accommodation ThreadThere's a mix of students in each halls. Tutors are meant to put that variety in there. Unless there is a really noticeable trend where people studying x subject are all poor and therefore must apply to the cheapest accommodation Cryfield, Whitefields, Benefactors (shared) or something.(Original post by milkbeetle)

Check out the facilities summary from Warwick Accommodation at the bottom of the first page for shower/bath/shower and bath options for each hall. -

Re: The Warwick Accommodation ThreadThe application forms haven't opened yet, check the accommodation website over the next few days to see if it has. It's meant to open mid May, whenever that is.(Original post by Skadoosh)
Hmmm.
Am I supposed to have applied for accomm by now??
Apply before July 31 to have the same chances as everyone else. -

Re: The Warwick Accommodation ThreadThere are no TV's located in accommodation blocks, unless a resident brings one and buys a TV license either for their room or for their kitchen (both places are separate).(Original post by starduster)
Are there TV's located at some place in all accommodation blocks? For example Saturday afternoon, premiership football... where do you go to watch?
To watch football, etc you can go to the Bar in Rootes Social Building (this is separate from Rootes Residences). They normally have a list somewhere of what's on during the forthcoming week.
The SU are also screening World Cup games in the Atrium of the SU (south) with a projection set up. They also screened election night coverage and other important events. -
Re: The Warwick Accommodation ThreadInteresting side point here - i stayed in cryfield over the easter break, and managed to wander back into JM1 at some points (the people staying there just held the doors open for me). there seemed to be TVs in the kitchens over easter, implying that the uni may have bought tv licences for the kitchens?(Original post by TheTallOne)

I also saw a TV license demand for our Kitchen a few weeks ago. I think they just bought it for 1 month (they can do that) just for the conference people. -

Re: The Warwick Accommodation ThreadWhat you write in the box had no impact on where you get allocated.(Original post by Zweihander)
I heard that which halls you're allocated largely depends what you put in the box where it asks about your personality. So any ideas on what to write if I want Rootes?
The primary factor that will determine where you end up will be your order of preference. And then other factors such as 'quiet area' and 'single sex area' may have some impact.
Once everyone has been given a hall, then the stuff you write is read by the warden and used to group you into flats/kitchens/corridors.
What you need to do to increase your chances of getting Rootes: put Rootes as your first choice; say no to single sex area; say no to quiet area. When you fill in your PS, make yourself out to be a more lively person. When it comes to wardens and allocations, either they don't care, or they try and get a mix of sociability. They don't want to group 12 quiet people together because then that area is just dead all of the time. Really where you end up is just luck. Anyway, if you hate your corridor there's one just 20 metres down the hall who you could become friends with. Or down below. Or above. Or there's plenty of other halls to visit. -
Re: The Warwick Accommodation Thread
Hey i'm basically just looking for help. This has probably already been asked but anyway.
I really don't know what accommodation to choose. I'm looking at Jack Martin and Rootes at the moment as strong runners. Have no idea about a third option maybe tocil. I'm gonna be doing Biological sciences so don't want to be too far away from Gibbet hill, which is where i assume all my lectures will be.
Also when it comes to filling in the accommodation form. I don't know if to tick i'm quiet or not. I like to socialize but i need my sleep too. Would it be best to tick it...and then in the about me section say i like socializing? -

Re: The Warwick Accommodation ThreadFor Bio Sciences you will have most lectures and labs in Gibbet Hill. So I'd say Westwood, Heronbank and Lakeside are further away and are in worse locations - I particularly would not like to have to get to Gibbet Hill from Westwood each morning.(Original post by Gotty91)

The remaining close choices are Tocil, Cryfield or Whitefields [given Benefactors and AV are 30 week en suite]. They are 39, 30 and 37 weeks respectively for 2010-11. Cryfield rooms are small but they cost probably £1000 less than Tocil, Whitefields is priced mid way between. Do you want to live in flats or corridors? Cryfield are corridors, Tocil are flats, with 6 flats in each building, while Whitefields are stand alone flats in their own building. Does distance to Tesco bother you? Tocil is closest, followed by Whitefields, then Cryfield.
I chose JM/Rootes/Tocil last year, ended up with JM
With JM and Tocil, the quiet/lively preference has basically no effect to be honest, there are a mix of quiet and lively people. Rootes probably leans more to lively/non-quiet. I'd definitely try and come across as sociable in the PS. -

Re: The Warwick Accommodation ThreadWell you're an international student I take it, so you have to ask yourself if it will be feasible to have a 30 week (or 37 week) let or not. If not, consider the 39 week lets, they're listed in the first few pages of this guide.(Original post by raes)
to current students: which let would you recommend for a first year? i saw that most ensuite rooms only have 30 weeks and all this moving seems to be a hassle... -
Re: The Warwick Accommodation Thread
Hi there, I'm an international student who is looking for a 39-week lets accommodation. I'm quite a quiet person, i don't like going out too much and I need the time on my own. But I also like making friends with people. I'm thinking between Tocil and Whitefield (37 week lets is ok) but I could not decide yet
Can anyone give me some advice please
