Just applied for accommodation Live in Cornwall so a 30 week let wasn't very useful for me. I chose:

1) Sherbourne
2) Bluebelle
3) Rootes
4) Jack Martin
5) Whitefields

Cant believe you have to wait this long until you know what you have been allocated

I was thinking about how the sun wouldn't shine directly into a north-facing room. Although having said that, I've lived in north-facing rooms and they tend to get really hot anyway in summer. So I suppose it depends on whether it's direct/reflected sunlight or heat that causes the most problems.

Most things, yeah. Or drop it in a friend's 39 week let.

You get a small cupboard that you can lock with a padlock - about 1.5m by 80cm by 80 cm - you can store stuff in there.

Most blocks also have a small trunk room that students can leave stuff in, but priority goes to international students here.

In case anyone is interested, Warwick is my insurance for European Law!

But it depends on your personal preferences really. What are your views on:

Loud/quiet
Security/freedom to see other corridors
Distance to campus and tesco

I'd say I'm quite a sociable person I'd prefer a 'louder' hall for a reasonable price! I'm not too fussed about the distance to campus though but I don't want to have to share a kitchen with too many people haha

Ok. Looking at your short-list of halls, Rootes has a reputation for being 'louder' but Westwood has a lot of people to a kitchen. With regards to prices, I couldn't really say what is reasonable - that would depend on your budget.

Rootesers are the most fanatic about how fun their halls are, but often quiet/boring people hate it there. Westwood is roundly mocked by everyone for being miles away. Whitefields has a pretty bad reputation, since the noise from the Union is very bad and the flats are anti-social compared to corridors. Jack Martin is pretty well thought of, since it's all pretty new and the kitchens are spacious. Sherbourne is new, I have no idea about it, and apparently the website doesn't have any actual pictures and won't say where it is (apart from it being 10 minutes away from campus).

Should I write this stuff (as in laundrette, location and north-facing) in my personal statement or should I write a separate letter and attach it with my doctor's letter?

I haven't seen this year's form so I can't say for certain, but if there is a space to fill in details of your disability then put it in there.

Okay so for me it was this major decision to put Arthur Vick or Rootes as my first choice....moving all my stuff out is effort so pricing and 39 week let appealed to me, but I can afford the Arthur Vick I think...
Though I am like a ridiculously social person and love to have fun all the time - I really don't want to fail my first year...so feel that if I go to Rootes I'll get swept away by the parties and not work at all....But I don't want to die of boredom in AV...Some people say it's fun still?

So I like a nice room, don't mind the walk because I have a bike BUT want a social area so would prefer to be closer to where the party's at :P I do need quiet work space though...and if it doesnt have an internal laundrette - id like to be reasonably close to it.

Questions:
1)Can any current students give me an idea of how much they spent weekly on stuff, so what sort of amount should you have left over to spend each week?

2)In Arthur Vick, can you still get that party atmosphere (if say you say in your personal statement that you are really sociable but also need quiet working space).

3)How welcoming are Rootes people when people from other residences want to come and party? Or does that not happen..?

4)Asides from Rootes and AV (and JM and Benefactors which apparently i can't pick if i choose AV) which residences have a good mix of social and work and are good for making friends and things like that - preferably halls and not apartments (apartments are less social/easy to hate who u live with and then have an awful time right)?

I basically can't answer any of your questions because I'm in the same boat as you, I was torn between Rootes & AV, but someone I know that lived in AV recommended Rootes and if they had another chance would go there, because AV was really quiet, and if you need quiet work places then you can go to the library anyway

Hi I'm just finishing my first year so I'll answer your questions as well as I can

1) I spend around £20-25 a week on food, for 7 dinners, 7 lunches, breakfast, milk, bottled water and snacks. But I know people who survive on a lot less, and eople who spend a lot more. Going out off campus I spend around £20 because taxi fares aren't cheap, entry is around a fiver and then drinks. Going out on campus is obviously much cheaper in first year, I tend to only take £5-10 out in the union. They're my two core costs and then buses are around £1.70-2.35 single if you plan on going off campus a lot. then factor in train fares home or to visit friends, and then stuff like if you plan on going for a drink in an evening or something. I budget about £60 a week but some of that usually goes on things like a coffee or extra treats from costcutter.

2) I know people in arthur vick who are definitely up for going out and they're kitchens seem like it as well. But, I live in Jack Martin and I wrote basically that on my personal statement as did the rest of my corridor, we all meant it differently and all have completely different lifestyles which can cause conflict from time to time so be really really specific about how much you want to go out, how much noise you could deal with, etc

3) Rootes seem like fairly welcoming people, everyone I've met from Rootes are lovely but can't say I've ever been out with them as most of my friends live elsewhere on campus. I can't see anyone minding you wanting to go out with them, every time I've been to other kitchens on campus no one really minds.

4) the other halls that are not apartment style are cryfield and westwood. I've not met anyone from cryfield so I'm not really sure how lively it is. A couple of my friends live in Westwood, it is quite an effort to get to campus (if you're likely to be at gibbet hill all the time don't pick it!) but the blocks are really sociable because there is around 20 people to a kitchen and each block has a massive common room. However, all I would say is that your halls are what you make it, I know people in tocil, which is flats, but I'd say that their block is more mixed that my JM block. Go for the ones you like best and be really clear about what you want on your personal statement. Even if you don't get exactly what you want, you will have friends who live in other places so you can just spend time with them instead.

So im an international student, and are considering whether I should get campus accommodation or not. The thing is I have a girlfriend, and she will probably be visting me alot, especially on weekends. So I'm wondering how the rules are for having overnight visitors? I read somewhere on the accomodation rules that there is a maximum of 2 days for visitors, but do u know how strict they enforce these rules? Is there anyway to work around them, or should I just get of campus accomodation?

They're not really that strict. There's no-one guarding the entrances to check who is in the building, so all she'll need to get in is for you to unlock the doors for her. You might be asked to inform your resident tutor when she is coming over (for health and safety purposes probably) but normally they won't mind.

As an example of what I've seen before, there was one room where the person living there had their friend/relative staying for almost the whole year solid. Even though we told the resident tutor about them (we suspected them of stealing food as well) they got away with it.

However at the other end of the scale, I had my brother over for a few days during the exam period, and the resident tutor was initially reluctant to let him come, but I managed to persuade her that he had come a long way and that we wouldn't be making a lot of noise.
