I've been given an offer from Warwick to do Computer Science, should be applying for accommodation soon. Can existing Warwick undergraduates share their opinions on the different accommodation available? I'm looking for an average priced one that isn't miles away from everything else! Thanks in advance!

Check out the accommodation guide linked in my sig, there's plenty of information there

so out of this 4 (Claycroft, Heronbank, Lakeside and Tocil), which ones have ensuite rooms and are best for studying and socialising both ?

Heronbank and Lakeside are ensuite, Claycroft is sharing with one other person but doesn't count as ensuite, as the accommodation guide says .

:hat2: By the way, looks like you'll be doing the same course I'm doing now so good luck on getting the results you need :h:
There is a guide on this somewhere...
Personally, I like Tocil best. I was there in my first year (applied again for final year, but didn't get it!) and it is reasonably priced, very central on campus (next to gym, near union and academic buildings) and the rooms were OK too.

To be honest though, if you asked all current first years which accommodation is best, I reckon 90% would say their own one! You'll have a great time wherever you are.
Pretty sure I am going for Westwood as my first choice, is it true they have music practice rooms?

1.Westwood
2.Rootes
3.Cryfield
I would love to put Rootes as my first choice, as I would love to live in a sociable environment
I have no idea for my other choices though, any ideas?

Maybe Jack Martin?

A tip though - if you particularly want your top one (this case Rootes) and can't think of three you actually want, then put either JM or AV as your third choice (even if you don't want to live there) because they're so popular and fill up with all the first choicers who get them that you won't be put in them anyway but they take a space on the form.

If you want social definitely don't go for Heronbank though - I've got a couple of friends who live over there and they've said their flats are basically dead. They've had to scout around to find people like them in HB and spend much more time over in my block (Claycroft).

But if there are any you don't want to end up in, then put the others down instead. En-suites are less so as if you don't put them down (especially first choice for JM/AV), you won't get them. Putting down only 2 feasible options can be a bit of a risk though, as there is a chance you will get neither and get placed in halls that you actually wanted to avoid. For example if you want to avoid Whitefields and don't mind anywhere else, put down Rootes and then Tocil/Claycroft/Cryfield/Westwood/en suite option in your preferred order, or failing that draw lots

Hey dude! Congrats on your offer, and good to hear that you're doin computer science because im a first year doing computing systems!

heres a link for accomodation overview on the warwick site - http://www2.warwick.ac.uk/services/accommodation/studentaccommodation/all/campus/residences/

do be honest best places to go for is Tocil or Rootes as the rent is good £81-£86 per week and best of all is its a 39 week! compared to 30 weeks in jack martin and arthur vick! Also all the 'cool' people are in Rootes and its very close to the union! But for convenience i'll go for tocil as its closer to the sports centre and DCS department, well just a little closer.. :P
hey

ok here's mah list:
-hopefully somewhere where there is a good mix of ppl, not too many geeks but not somewhere which only has partyanimals either, just a nice balance. im an outgoing guy but i like to have some quietish friends to balance me out.
-a nice commonroom (hopefully a tv, pool table, etc.) which people actually chillax in and is a good place to meet ppl
-not too many international students
-somewhere where there are a lot of ppl to meet, and where there is a strong sense of community
-just a nice atmosphere where there arent any tw*ts

basically my priority is (same as everyone else i spose) making as many friends as possible, but making some amazing "inner circle" friends as well. i don't wanna be somewhere where you're friends with everyone, but you don't have many close friends if that makes sense. just looking for a balance.

Common room.. only two or three come with actual common rooms, Arthur Vick and Benefactors are two of them, I think there are a couple more. All blocks have kitchens, which are effectively used as the area for socialising. None of the accommodation blocks come supplied with a pool table as far as I know, you have to supply your own. However there are a few dotted around campus. Same goes for TVs - you need to supply your own, and buy a communal kitchen licence too, if necessary. Warwick has a lot of international students, though I don't know what you'd have against them - I think there are some halls that tend to have more international students than others (probably the 39-week lets) but there are international students in every hall. You can get a strong sense of community and nice atmosphere from any block, it will depend on who exactly you're living with as there can be "dodgy" corridors in every block (by dodgy I simply mean they don't fit the stereotype). Anyway, you'll probably find you make more friends from your course/sports/clubs than you do from your accommodation.

I think that some Westwood halls form the strongest communities on campus because they are so far away from other accommodations: they end up spending more time with each other and you end up with closer friendships. Obviously the disadvantages of this is that you are further away from campus and where your lectures are.

On the subject of shared lounges: these are available in Arthur Vick, Benefactors, Claycroft, Heronbank, Lakeside and Whitefields. All other accommodations only have a kitchen. If you want a communal TV, someone needs to bring/buy a TV and you also need to sort out at TV license - the cost probably split between everyone who has access to the lounge. No pool tables (that I know of) - you need to go to the SU for that :p:

Hey there guys,

How are you all doing? I know there has been quite a few threads abt accommodation etc, nd here is another one.

I was just wondering what your personal recommendations are? For an international student. Lot of people are suggesting jack martins/ arthur vick! and i think ima choose one of them, but i can only choose 1 en suite, nd duno wot 2 put down 4 my other two?

Also, is the accommodation like mixed? I mean ( I kno this sounds silly) isit that the British Asians usually go for 1 sort of accommodation, international students other, or indians/pakistanis/chinese etc?

Quite a few people over here hav suggested rootes and it does seem pretty cool. they say the social life is really gd there, but im not exactly sure if thats a good thing? tht could just probably mean more parties, noise, etc.

Any suggestions other than that?

Anything else you guys know, any pointers or warning or piece of advice would be highest appreciated!

Thank you

Is Rootes/Benefactors/Claycroft a good combination then? Good social life in all three?

I see you're 16 :holmes: (I was 17 for 6 weeks when I started last September). When you refer to social life do you mean bars and clubs or something else?

I found that the SU rarely IDs (as in only once so far) and for the first 6 weeks it was totally fine.

Bear in mind that Benefactors is ensuite and putting it second means there is virtually no chance of you getting it. In fact, seeing as you are under 18 you are more or less guaranteed first choice I believe (either that or there is a disproportionate number of under 18s living in Jack Marti).

what's the social life like in westwood though? i've read people can't be asked to walk to the union a lot of the time? what's the trade-off?
how to people there spend there time, etc.?
what stereotype does it have?
How does the uni charge you for accomodation? I mean is it straight out of your bank account which the loan is or by cash?

The normal way to pay is by direct debit, straight out of your bank account, three times a year.
