Competition is tough at every medical school. For Barts, last year just over 2600 applied with around 240-250 being admitted. This year many more people applied(exact stats haven't come out yet though). But those statistics shouldn't mean much, the competition is strong everywhere.

Apply to your strengths. If you get a nice UKCAT with good A2 predictions then your UCAS tariff will be advantageous for an interview at Barts. If your GCSEs are straight A*s you'll be advantageous for Birmingham. Once you get an interview then it all depends on your performance.
