Re: Bumps, Blades, and Bowballs- Cambridge Boatie ChatI heard that the Caius M1 had to take a lot of novices this year and that some of the senior rowers remaining bailed out rather than be seen in a lower quality boat. However that may just be a vicious rumour.(Original post by Helenia)
I am hoping that people will be surprised by Clare - they've certainly got a MUCH stronger crew this term than last term, and although I haven't seen them race yet, I wouldn't mind betting they'll put up a damn good fight to hold on to the Headship. Caius will hold the men's, no contest, unless something drastic has happened that I'm not aware of. It'll take a lot to upset that top 3 in M1 now; it's been the same for 3 years.
I'm going to bank party Newnham short course today so I'll keep my eyes peeled for anyone looking particularly good. -
Re: Bumps, Blades, and Bowballs- Cambridge Boatie ChatStill not a good enough effort to hold the headship I'm afraid.(Original post by Helenia)

I think that is where you'll be suprised. Caius were well off the pace in Fairburns. Jesus were the fastest men's crew on the river in the Mays last year, and they followed that up by winning fairburns. Downing who sit in third look really poor this term, I think they have about 4 novices in the boat, and I wouldn't mind predicting they'll spoon. FaT will just be like usual, so near and yet so far, off the pace. I reckon the top 3 will end up like:(Original post by Helenia)

Re: Bumps, Blades, and Bowballs- Cambridge Boatie Chat
Head of the Nene was fun today. LOT of "special" coxing on the way to the start (about 6k upriver, to then spin and race 5k back. Lovely!) as the boat in front of us, Imperial, hit the bank at least three times. People didn't seem to be able to be used to the river- it was about 60ft wide, which compared to the Cam is massively wide but compared to the Tideway is rubbish- hence, I think, Imperial's problems. The Warwick second boat didn't show up, which was a shame, but we gained about two lengths on their first boat ahead of us (Clare M2), one of which was due simply to my proper cornering technique- blades 6 inches away from the corner as it's supposed to be, unlike Warwick's effort of staying in the middle of the stream...
We'd have done better, I think, had we not mannaged to crab spectacularly just over halfway when piling through 2ft chop. Suffice to say there was a spectacular crab enough to stop the boat and force me to do a full racing restart.
Overall, though, it was good fun.
Clare M1 went well too- they managed to voertake Tit Hall M1, who started four stations ahead of them...

Results for Newnham
http://www.srcf.ucam.org/ncbc/
Jesus domination by M3, 1st in our division, 2nd overall. Don't know where our M2 are though, I was sure they raced. -
Re: Bumps, Blades, and Bowballs- Cambridge Boatie Chat
Hehe- Clare W2, despite also having to stop part way through and row in sixes part of the time, still weren't last and still beat Clare Hall W1. And got a close time with Churchill W1...

For Head of the Nene, there's a couple, and I mean a couple, of the results HERE. -
Re: Bumps, Blades, and Bowballs- Cambridge Boatie ChatWell, I'm not promising anything, but given nobody thought we'd hold it last year, I wouldn't write them off too soon. A hell of a lot has been improved on since last term.(Original post by HappyHupo)

People have trash-talked Caius every year I've been here. It takes a lot to go up 3 to headship, so I think Jesus will struggle a lot with that (regardless of how many times they shout "domination") Downing may well fall, but FaT and Caius are still looking good.I think that is where you'll be suprised. I'm feeling very sorry for Clare W2, they did actually row pretty well for the bit where they didn't have a huge unrecoverable crab. We'll see how the rest of the term progresses... -
Re: Bumps, Blades, and Bowballs- Cambridge Boatie Chat
Newnham was a disappointment for us (Maggie M2).
It was going awesomely, we took a good 3 or 4 lengths out of those above and behind us in the first 500m, then caught two hideous, boat-stopping crabs.
Oh well. Three weeks 'til Lents!
Oh, and I wouldn't write off Maggie M1 doing well... -
Re: Bumps, Blades, and Bowballs- Cambridge Boatie Chat
hehe, Peterhouse W1 caught a huge crab too, had to stop for 20 odd seconds (our coach reckons) to recover, and were still 6th!
W2 managed to break a blade though, not so good... Thankfully we've just been bought new blades, so they can have our old ones

Re: Bumps, Blades, and Bowballs- Cambridge Boatie Chat
Anyone know anything about Caius M3...?

Edit: Going out with the boaties tonight for a meal and (gasp!) karaeoke... Going to be fun but (dare I say it!) embarrassing. I might have to get all my boat up there for a rousing song of some sort.Last edited by FadeToBlackout; 05-02-2007 at 17:04. -
Re: Bumps, Blades, and Bowballs- Cambridge Boatie ChatNot sure about Caius 3, but I've heard Clare M2 are pretty shocking(Original post by FadeToBlackout)

, apparently their cox hasn't got a clue!

Re: Bumps, Blades, and Bowballs- Cambridge Boatie ChatWell, their cox (unlike the Imperial cox ahead of him at HOTN, could steer down the river without hitting the bank or other boats...(Original post by HappyHupo)

He does, though, normally cox the Simoco women's eight that was last. But he wasn't coxing them on Saturday! -
Re: Bumps, Blades, and Bowballs- Cambridge Boatie Chat
*bumps*
Interesting coxing this afternoon... some random chavs threw snowballs at us, at which I was supremely tempted to park at the bank and unleash my 6'3" strokeman and the rest of the first men's boat on them...
There were also a few icebergs. No, really! Massive big lumps of snow floating down the river. I hit one but managed to miss the rest. -
Re: Bumps, Blades, and Bowballs- Cambridge Boatie Chat
fartlek doesnt have to be 45 minutes - it's just any training which has small bursts of high intensity in it.
The key point with fartlek if you ask me is about consistency - you should only ever have two splits on your screen: Your steady state split, and your higher intensity split. As soon as you come out of the burst, ok, you can take two or three strokes off, but then you should be right back to your steady state.
