i myself find it pretty interesting, theres alot involved in it, more than just looking at rocks (apart from in earth materials :p:) the paelo and volcanology courses in it are alot better.

however, you probably wont like it if you dont enjoy travelling. when i was applying nearly every uni was heavily based on field work e.g. mapping, so if you dont like it, its probably best not to take it.

Geology is great, but be prepared to find it hard work in the first semester, if you've never done it beforee. I struggled for a while, as I had no experience and nearly everyone else did, which made life difficult!

Thats one thing im abit concerned about is having no experience... although i do think i will enjoy travelling. I notice you study at keele? how do you find it? thats one of the places ive applied for.

that reminded me of another thing, it also depends on what uni you go to. here at soton i have to do a fair bit of oceanography in my course, whereas i know other unis focus more on maths and chemistry, so you may want to work out your preferences like that.

I'm also at Keele doing geology and for the first semester it was a struggle, but in my year only about a 1/3 of people had done some geology before so we were all in the same boat. It gets easier with time though .

Keele is ace, im sure suzie will agree. With a great department and legends such as Mike Montenari and Ralf Gertisser. Its a great place, I have to say.

Yeah Mike and Ralf are true legends to say the least, and espec Mike's irish coca cola when you go to Pembrokshire hehe . Stimo is also a legend, he likes his eggs and sausage a bit to much though on fieldtrips . In fairness all of the geol lecturers are ace although John can be a bit boring but when he tells his dry jokes you cant help but smile. Keele is amazingly friendly and i get on with everyone so well. I think it's the fieldtrips that help you bond after a hard days work in the field, when you all meet in the pub. It's also funny when you see all you lecturers getting wasted and the demonstrators skinny dipping hehe

im not normally a person that does advertising, but come to soton. its an awesome uni, with some classic lecturers, all of whom seem to insult the isle of wight too much

ts got a good rep for geology, and overall, and is a nice uni in general, and less islolated than keele i think (i got ann offer there 2 years ago, but didnt go on the open day)

Well i cant argue with that, yeah keele is a rural village compared to soton lol.It is only a 10 min drive to a city though for all the shopping, plus the union is great as it knows with the location people could get bored, so there is something going on every night. I was given offers for both soton and keele, but i instantly felt a warmth at keele that soton didnt give me. I'm incredibly happy here so all is good. Each to their own at the end of the day though... Keele rocks, sorry it had to be done

hehe geology rocks! :P
I've applied for soton geology, and another couse which i think is physical geography, i hoping to go there but i'll most probly end up in pompey because i only need 3 D's for the courses there lol. Goes to shoe how many people love rocks:rolleyes: and i've been learning physical geog / geology since year 10, so i should hopefully be alright with the workload etc.

thats cool. i do straight geology, but my optional modules are the geography ones, and theyre quite fun.
