Is work experience good for applications to do Physics or Engineering?

Hello.

Yes, if you can do a relevant work experience, then it is a good addition for application. This is because the experience shows your genuine interest in wanting to pursue the course and your ability to go out and make it happen

In addition, a work experience can allow you to go inside the world of engineering and understand some of the things that happen within the companies. You will be able to draw on your experiences, as you choose which subjects to do at A’ levels or how the experience enabled you to appreciate or want to pursue a particular discipline.

Now, you have to understand that there is high competition for applicants to the top schools like Oxbridge, Manchester, Warwick, UCL, Imperial, Durham and so on. So the admission officers will be looking for ways to differentiate applicants.

Ways to do that are:

1. Why does this applicant want to study this course?
2. Why this university or department?
3. Is he or she genuine about their interest? If so, where is the evidence? (relevant experience and subjects)
4. Can the applicant do the subject and do they have the aptitude to take on challenging material in the course? (evidence from strong test scores in A levels or GCSE)
5. If we take this kid, what unique addition can they bring to the class?

These are some of the questions that you should ask yourself and admission folks will be asking themselves when reading your application.

Good luck.
