What course to study to be a journalist?

I want to be a journalist. I did work experience at a newspaper and their advice was to study something I found interesting at uni. I am thinking about studying politics and was wondering if anyone else is doing this or has any advice?

Do the course in the area which you want to cover as a journalist. If it's politics, then clearly politics would be the best choice.

Remember to look at course content etc. to see if you actually find these sorts of things interesting.

There are also programmes called BA Journalism though people will not recommend these because of the low graduate prospects and the fact that since they're only done by newer universities you'll be more likely to attend a 'less prestigious' university.

Check out all your options though, both degree-wise and institution-wise. Good luck.

If you want to be a journalist, you will need to know how the media industry operates and learn about this. The best journalism school in the UK is in Cardiff University. I did my BA in Journalism, Media and Cultural Studies, it's a broad course so you can specialise in any are, furthermore it is a very respected department internationally. I definitely do not regret having done this course, also it is a Russell Group university and has a great student life.

That is my advice, but it is your choice. Good luck whatever you choose.
