The Student Room Group

Would you use condoms that would change colour if it detected an STI?

There has been a lot of talk about condoms lately, with evenBill Gates willing to fund projects into making them safer and better.
More recently a group of students have been given a prize forcreating condoms that change colour when they come into contact with STI’s.Would you use them?
Was it a stupid idea contest?

Leaving aside the way that there are going to be plenty of STIs it wouldn't detect, there's the slight problem of the ethical issues around testing other people without their consent.

That would be soooo embarrassing afterwards though, and it would have to be consensual...

Seems like a good idea at first, but does seem pretty reduntant. Using a condom is already protects you pretty damn well against STI's. It's not the condom using people who cause most of the STI spread.

"please, Sexy, can't we have sex without a condom? It doesn't feel as good"
"but this one detects STI's"
"oh, that's ok then!"

We need an STI detecting non-condom!

Then the ethical issues and the false trust in this instead of going to a clinic to get tested.

It's sort of a mood killer. Once you see the colour change, highly doubt you'd carry on with the sex.

I don't know why this has got so much news coverage. Nothing has been invented. They came up with a frankly unworkable idea with no scientific basis and it's been thoroughly publicised.
