Part time jobs

Is it easy to find a part-time job?
The perks of Canterbury being very much a student town is that jobs are very seasonal. There's a lot of employment turnover as businesses gain/lose staff based on term dates. That doesn't mean it's easy but there's a lot of part time jobs going. Bars & hospitality, supermarkets, high street shops, the usual :yy:

Champagne left Kent a few years ago I believe, but from my own research I believe the university helps, with the union having a service called jobshop to help find part time work. I would also guess there are a fair number of jobs available on campus especially with them opening their own take away franchises and then you can expect the normal kind of part time jobs in the city centre.

hello penguin!
It will be really good if the university helps. I really need a part time job to support my living cost. Hope I can handle my studies .
Yes its easy to find part time work...their not looking for geniuses, just someone who fits their brand image! A lot of companies don't even ask for CV's anymore (E.g. Sainsbury's)

I graduated some time ago now, but I did have a job whilst there. Campus based ones are in higher demand purely because of easy access etc. The town centre would probably be your main focus though. As penguinfarts above says, there is a jobshop service run by the university but this was very hit and miss in my experience. You'd be better off looking for job adverts directly on the company websites.

No, you will need to look for yourself. The university runs a 'jobshop' to help you but it does not provide you with one.

Yeah, it would be fine. Canterbury is very accessible.

Does having a part-time job on campus get in the way of socialising in a significant way? I definitely want to get some extra money but I'd be a little hesitant if it meant I got no time to hang out with anyone or do anything

If anything, it meant I had another circle of friends to hang out with and helped me get to know way more people. If you're working somewhere like Venue where the only hours are in the evening, sure, that's going to have a larger impact than with other jobs. From my experience, a lot of first years don't seek or get that many part-time jobs in first year for whatever reason.
I've worked a few jobs with the University as I definitely recommend it as the hours are very flexible. Certainly apply to be a student ambassador (tour guide) as it pays well and you can choose which days you want to work. However, most on-campus jobs are advertised in February, so they can train students over the summer term, and be ready to start working during freshers week. Just make sure you've signed up to Kent Union's jobshop email alerts and keep a lookout for jobs! The University also has a free careers service where they can look over your CV

But their social media pages advertise particular jobs. That is quite deceiving in my opinion.
