Theres a las vegas night at one of the colleges tomorrow night.
Basically most of the stuff you want, durham has, if they don't you can set something up.

If you like debating, there's the union society, but basically I know quite a few teetotal people and they love it here and have really full socail lives. There's loads of sports and music socieities, subject-related societies, your college newspaper, the uni newspaper, durham 21 website....basically, don't worry about it!

To just clarify Becca's pont, the durham21 she is referring to is http://www.durham21.co.uk. Teetotal, piss-head, whatever....all welcome

And we don't thrust stuff at you on the street.

I could think of a few things that Durham students need thrusting.

Bullets from a gun for example

Is that a dig at the new magazine that was out in Michaelmas term that I saw mentioned here?

I don't know myself, since I'm in Spain and unaware!:p:

Got an offer from Durham for Psychology
I was wondering what the social scene is like for people who don't really frequent bars and clubs all that much at all? What are the events like? etc
Thanks!

The only problems I could see is if you refused to go in a bar at any time of day, rather than simply not drinking alcohol.

Some colleges have alcohol free (or at least not alcohol centred) games and activities early on in Freshers week held in the bar itself. Trevs also has the JCR meetings in there etc.

As for not drinking, you will be one of many at Durham. All the tee-totallers I know seem to get on just fine, although quite a few of them do end up going to bars occasionally but just drinking soft drinks. A pint of coke or lemonade is between 40-50p in the college bars

Apparantly the bowling alley has just re-opened, which is a traditional alcohol free afternoon's enterntainment.

More an observation than a dig.

Why Durham needs another newspaper is beyond me.

At formals, soft drinks are free. I don't know if this is true at all colleges or not though.

Why not?

It's not costing me anything, and it's another source of comments on life at Durham. Whilst some of it may be crappy, it's good to know that other media sources at Durham have got some competition rather than just being able to sit back and do as they like.

And anyway, if they created a new newspaper and just put a pile in the DSU do you think there would be anyone reading it? No...there would be very few! They've used a good method of circulation so far to get people interested, true the first issue was pretty crap, but let's see how it goes.

I could always say "Why Durham needs another student website is beyond me" referring to Durham21, but I don't...the more the merrier! Catering for everyone, etc etc

I think that everything they want to say can be said within the existing media available, whether it be in Palatinate or on durham21. Some of the content is really intellignet, funny, interesting etc but to say that the newspaper was set-up because this type of writing is not available elsewhere is not true.

Also, I wonder who is paying for this newspaper? Is it being wholly covered by advertising?

I didn't know that there were any other Durham student websites. The content of durham21 is driven by what people want to contribute to the site. If it doesn't then cater for everyone it is because no-one is prepared to spend the time and effort needed to improve the site.

Rubbish. There is only so much space in Palatinate and Durham21, to be fair whilst it may be "voted some amazing site" or something, is barely known. I NEVER hear anyone talking about Durham21 outside of TSR, and I can guarantee you that none of my friends regularly (or even rarely!) visit it.

If someone wants to have a go at setting up a new newspaper and see if they can be more successful than other media sources then let them have a go, especially if it is all being funded through advertising!

Anyway, Palatinate has a far more serious/journalistic edge to it whilst The Sanctuary was far more comedic/randomly put together...I enjoy Palatinate for the more indepth stories, but The Sanctuary was a laugh. It's good that there is this division.

And if there aren't people who are willing to contribute to Durham21, then even more reason for other sources of media

Durham21 can use as much or as little space as is required.

We don't know whether it is being funded through advertisement or if it is being bankrolled by some faceless suger daddy

Can you give me an idea of why people would be more willing to contribute to mostly-harmless than durham21.

To their credit I think their website http://www.mostly-harmless.org.uk is rather good. Even if the smug sense of intellectual superiority in some of the writing is not to my conservative tastes
