Men protecting Women?

A women I am friends with on Facebook was attacked by a dude after they bumped cars. He punched her twice and then left. There was a guy standing on the pavement and he did nothing. Just stood their and watched. Then after she shouted at him what are you doing, why didn't you step in. The guy said because he thought they were in a relationship.

So my question is should it not be the duty of all men to protect women if they are being attacked by another man.

I'd rather be a coward than help a sexist woman like yourself.
The majority of people would stand and watch to be honest. They may say otherwise, but when push comes to shove, they wouldn't help.
Yes us men have to protect woman, it's our duty. Men who don't protect woman should be ashamed of themselves.

How would the guy have helped in the situation mentioned anyway? It was over before he would have had a chance to react. His presence would have made it longer and potentially worse.
