    Internet?
I've been reading around the Cardiff site and it says that Internet connection is only "as a private study aid". What does this mean exactly? It's not like I'm gonna go looking at porno and whatnot, but can you do personal stuff?

    *confused lol*

    Help please!!

Yeah, that's a load of rubbish. There's blocks on things like Limewire (though some of the guys in our flat managed to override that), but apart from that I haven't come across a blocked website yet!

Lol, yeah Reslan's alright really. You can't have webcam convos for some reason, and I think a few download sites are barred (heard of people having trouble with itunes...) but apart from that tis normal internet. Study aid my ass... don't think I've ever really used it for that.

Itunes works. The store is really slow to load here though, but with a bit of patience it's ok. Seriously wouldn't worry, spend way too much time on internet!

Yeah, you can use the internet for non-work stuff in halls.

It's shockingly slow though. Really. It's like being back in the dark ages sometimes :p:

It's usually pretty bad. Compared to my home connection, anyway.

not massively fast. 4 megabit blueyonder, iirc.

At home, I usually run bittorrent in the background and it's still quicker than the crappy connection here.

Any idea how they managed to get Limewire to work? You've got no idea how much I miss being able to download stuff!

you need to sign up to a http portal - for example "your-freedom" to get through the unis firewall. you need to pay for this in order to get sufficient bandwidth to make p2p viable, but it works. there may be other solutions, but that's the only one i know of.

Just double check that your computer is completly free of virus. I assumed after running every anti-virus software at my disposal before leaving it would be ok. But the Reslan disc picked up something that they didn't which meant no internet access for me. I also didn't have time to format it so I had to use my flatmates computer.
But from what I saw the internet service was fine.

Nope! You get a cable and a CD to run when you move in, then you're all set to go!

no - the reference to paying i mentioned was only if you want to be able to use p2p through the university servers.

Reslan is evil! It took me 5 attempts and 3 diff discs to try and get it to install, and there weren't any viruses on my pc cus I restored it!

Reslan sees itself as a bloody virus! Like if you try it more than once, then it'll find Sophos and think it's a virus... Such a pain!

Stupid university gave me a 2005/6 disc, which royally screwed up my Internet for ages! Check they've given you the right Reslan disc before installing folks!
