Lyrics are what makes a song and so i was thinking, what are the best lyrics i have ever heard? First thought was "One Tree Hill" by U2 and another thought i had was "Bittersweet Symphony" by The Verve. But i think One Tree Hill gets the edge as the song creates beautiful imagery So i will post both lyrics and decide for yourself or you can post your favourite lyrics of all time. But in additions to any other requests i would still like it if people would pass comment on the 2 songs that i put forward as i have a teeny bet on the winner!!!
First of all here are the 2 songs:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s2juMzBCDSQ "One Tree Hill" U2
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y7IrG-dnXsQ "Bittersweet Symphony" The Verve

    Here are the lyrics:

    One Tree Hill

We turn away to face the cold, enduring chill
As the day begs the night for mercy love
The sun so bright it leaves no shadows
    Only scars carved into stone
    On the face of earth
The moon is up and over One Tree Hill
We see the sun go down in your eyes

You run like river, on like a sea
You run like a river runs to the sea

And in the world a heart of darkness
    A fire zone
    Where poets speak their heart
    Then bleed for it
Jara sang, his song a weapon
    In the hands of love
You know his blood still cries
    From the ground

It runs like a river runs to the sea
It runs like a river to the sea

I don't believe in painted roses
    Or bleeding hearts
While bullets rape the night of the merciful
    I'll see you again
When the stars fall from the sky
And the moon has turned red
    Over One Tree Hill

    We run like a river
    Run to the sea
We run like a river to the sea
    And when it's raining
    Raining hard
    That's when the rain will
    Break my heart

    Raining...raining in the heart
    Raining in your heart
    Raining...raining to your heart
    Raining, raining...raining
    Raining to your heart
    Raining...raining in your heart
    Raining in your heart..
    To the sea

    Oh great ocean
    Oh great sea
    Run to the ocean
    Run to the sea

    "Bittersweet Symphony" The Verve

'Cause it's a bittersweet symphony, this life
    Try to make ends meet
You're a slave to money then you die
I'll take you down the only road I've ever been down
You know the one that takes you to the places
where all the veins meet yeah,

    No change, I can change
I can change, I can change
But I'm here in my mold
I am here in my mold
But I'm a million different people
from one day to the next
    I can't change my mold
    No, no, no, no, no

    Well I never pray
But tonight I'm on my knees yeah
I need to hear some sounds that recognize the pain in me, yeah
I let the melody shine, let it cleanse my mind, I feel free now
But the airways are clean and there's nobody singing to me now

    No change, I can change
I can change, I can change
But I'm here in my mold
I am here in my mold
And I'm a million different people
from one day to the next
    I can't change my mold
    No, no, no, no, no
    I can't change
    I can't change

'Cause it's a bittersweet symphony, this life
    Try to make ends meet
Try to find some money then you die
I'll take you down the only road I've ever been down
You know the one that takes you to the places
where all the things meet yeah

You know I can change, I can change
I can change, I can change
But I'm here in my mold
I am here in my mold
And I'm a million different people
from one day to the next
    I can't change my mold
    No, no, no, no, no

    I can't change my mold
    no, no, no, no, no,
    I can't change
    Can't change my body,
    no, no, no

I'll take you down the only road I've ever been down
I'll take you down the only road I've ever been down
    Been down
    Ever been down
    Ever been down
    Ever been down
    Ever been down
    Have you ever been down?
    Have you've ever been down?

I personally think 'Lovers Are Mortal - Be Bop Deluxe' are really enticing (draw you in and make you listen) and apparently 'The Smiths - How Soon is Now' is regarded as highly in terms of lyrics.

Punk lyrics are invariably the best given there reflection of real life. So I'm gonna go with the cream of the crop and say Undertones - Teenage Kicks.

Are teenage dreams so hard to beat
Everytime she walks down the street
    Another girl in the neighbourhood
Wish she was mine, she looks so good

I wanna hold her wanna hold her tight
Get teenage kicks right through the night

I'm gonna call her on the telephone
Have her over cos i'm all alone
I need exitement oh i need it bad
And its the best, i've ever had

I wanna hold her wanna hold her tight
Get teenage kicks right through the night

I wanna hold her wanna hold her tight
Get teenage kicks right through the night

I really like Kate Bush's Babooshka lyrics... They tell a story. I like songs that tell a story: enticing.

    Babooshka - Kate Bush

She wanted to test her husband.
She knew exactly what to do:
    A pseudonym to fool him.
She couldnt have made a worse move.

    She sent him scented letters,
And he received them with a strange delight.
    Just like his wife
But how she was before the tears,
And how she was before the years flew by,
And how she was when she was beautiful.
    She signed the letter

    All yours,
    Babooshka, babooshka, babooshka-ya-ya!
    All yours,
    Babooshka, babooshka, babooshka-ya-ya!

She wanted to take it further,
So she arranged a place to go,
    To see if he
    Would fall for her incognito.
And when he laid eyes on her,
He got the feeling they had met before.
    Uncanny how she
Reminds him of his little lady,
Capacity to give him all he needs,
Just like his wife before she freezed on him,
Just like his wife when she was beautiful.
    He shouted out, im

    All yours,
    Babooshka, babooshka, babooshka-ya-ya!
    All yours,
    Babooshka, babooshka, babooshka-ya-ya!
    All yours,
    Babooshka, babooshka, babooshka-ya-ya!

We Looked Like Giants by Death Cab has great lyrics, as does Evil in a Closet by In Flames, Black Hole Sun by Soungarden and Sliver by Nirvana. In all it is very difficult to say, as different lyrics are the 'best' of their genre.

However, I'd have to say Live in a Hiding Place by Idlewild and The Sound of Silence by Simon and Garfunkel, as possibly my favourite two songs out of them all, would have to be my nominations.

That scottish fiction poem read at the end of Idlewild's In Remote Part / Scottish Fiction has to be mentioned as well. I love that bit.

    Personally I like:

Led Zeppelin - Stairway To Heaven

    Theres a lady whos sure
    All that glitters is gold
And shes buying a stairway to heaven.
When she gets there she knows
If the stores are all closed
With a word she can get what she came for.
Ooh, ooh, and shes buying a stairway to heaven.

Theres a sign on the wall
But she wants to be sure
cause you know sometimes words have two meanings.
In a tree by the brook
    Theres a songbird who sings,
Sometimes all of our thoughts are misgiven.
    Ooh, it makes me wonder,
    Ooh, it makes me wonder.

    Theres a feeling I get
When I look to the west,
And my spirit is crying for leaving.
In my thoughts I have seen
Rings of smoke through the trees,
And the voices of those who standing looking.
    Ooh, it makes me wonder,
Ooh, it really makes me wonder.

    And its whispered that soon
If we all call the tune
Then the piper will lead us to reason.
And a new day will dawn
    For those who stand long
And the forests will echo with laughter.

If theres a bustle in your hedgerow
    Dont be alarmed now,
Its just a spring clean for the may queen.
Yes, there are two paths you can go by
    But in the long run
Theres still time to change the road youre on.
    And it makes me wonder.

Your head is humming and it wont go
    In case you dont know,
The pipers calling you to join him,
Dear lady, can you hear the wind blow,
    And did you know
Your stairway lies on the whispering wind.

And as we wind on down the road
Our shadows taller than our soul.
There walks a lady we all know
Who shines white light and wants to show
How evrything still turns to gold.
And if you listen very hard
The tune will come to you at last.
When all are one and one is all
To be a rock and not to roll.

And shes buying a stairway to heaven.

    Yellowcard - How I Go

I could tell you the wildest of tales
My friend the giant and travelling de salles
Tell you of all the times that I've failed
The year's all behind me the stories have staled

And I'm drying out crying out
    This isn't how I go

I could tell you all the men not so tall
Who said life's a circus and so we are small
Tell you of a girl that I saw
I froze in the moment and she changed it all

And I'm drying out crying out
    This isn't how I go
    Hurry now lay me down
    And let these waters flow...flow
Son I am not everything you thought that I would be
But every story I have told is part of me

You keep the air in my lungs
Floating along as the melody comes
My heart beats like timphony drums
Keeping the time while the symphony strums

And I'm drying out crying out
    This isn't how I go
    Hurry now lay me down
    And let these waters flow...flow
    Let it flow
    Let it flow

Son I am not everything you thought that I would be
But every story I have told is part of me
Son I leave you now but you have so much to do
And every story I have told is part of you

    Michelle Branch - Everywhere

Turn it inside out so I can see
The part of you thats drifting over me
And when I wake youre never there
But when I sleep youre everywhere
    Youre everywhere

Just tell me how I got this far
Just tell me why youre here and who you are
    cause every time I look
    Youre never there
    And every time I sleep
    Youre always there

    cause youre everywhere to me
And when I close my eyes its you I see
    Youre everything I know
    That makes me believe
    Im not alone
    Im not alone

I recognize the way you make me feel
    Its hard to think that
    You might not be real
I sense it now, the waters getting deep
I try to wash the pain away from me
    Away from me

    cause youre everywhere to me
And when I close my eyes its you I see
    Youre everything I know
    That makes me believe
    Im not alone
    Im not alone

    I am not alone
    Whoa, oh, oooh, oh

And when I touch your hand
    Its then I understand
    The beauty thats within
    Its now that we begin
    You always light my way
I hope there never comes a day
    No matter where I go
    I always feel you so

    cause youre everywhere to me
And when I close my eyes its you I see
    Youre everything I know
    That makes me believe
    Im not alone
    cause youre everywhere to me
And when I catch my breath
    Its you I breathe
    Youre everything I know
    That makes me believe
    Im not alone

    Youre in everyone I see
    So tell me
    Do you see me?

Less Than Jake - History of a Boring Town

    ust talked to this
    Girl who used to live
    On my street

    After all these years
Youre here and you remember me.

She said her old boyfriend packed up
And headed back east but she always
Knew someday he would go she just got
A new job but doubts it will last.

So lets take a drink and never
    Think heres to the past

    And she says
    Its so funny how life
    Burns out so fast its
    Just another wasted
Day a boring life in a
    Boring town with the
    Same old crowd and i
    Used to say that id
    Never stay

    But Im rotting here
Today with that same old crowd
    Thats always been
    Around and I always
    Thought Id be the
    First to go. that
    Same old crowd
    That brings me down
    Another day in a
    Boring town.

    And remember when
    Theyd look through
    You and then look
    Past me we were
    The ones they said
    Would always leave

When you go think of me.

    Metallica - Ronnie

    Story starts
    Quiet town
    Small town boy
    Big time frown
    Never talks
    Never plays
    Different path
    Lost his way

    The streets are red
    Red I'm afraid
    There's no confetti
    No parade
Nothing happens in this boring place
But oh my god how it all did change
    Now they all pray
    Blood stain wash away

    He said
    Lost my way
    This bloody day
    Lost my way

    I heard him
    He said
    Lost my way
    This bloody day
    Lost my way
    All things wash away
But blood stained the sun red today

    I always said
    Something wrong
    With little strange
    Ronnie Long
    Never laughed
    Never smiled
Talked alone for miles and miles and miles

    Gallow calls
    Son I say
Keep your smile and laugh all day
Think once again in this boring place
For little boys how they soon change

    Now they all pray
    Blood stain wash away

    He said
    Lost my way
    This bloody day
    Lost my way

    Yeah, I heard him
    He said
    Lost my way
    This bloody day
    Lost my way
    All things wash away
But blood stained the sun red today

    (Spoken)
Yeah, well all the green things died
When Ronnie moved to this place
    He said
    Don't you dare ask
Why I'm cursed to wear this face

    Now we all know why
The children called him Ronnie Frown
When he pulled that gun from his pocket
They all fall down, down, down

    He said
    Lost my way
    This bloody day
    Lost my way

    Yeah, Yeah, I heard him
    He screamed
    Lost my way
    This bloody day
    Lost my way
    All things wash away
But blood stained the sun red today

    That's right
    All things wash away
    They all fall down
But blood stained the sun today

    All things wash away
    And they all fall down
But blood stained the sun today

Children of Bodom - Are You Dead Yet?

    Don't hear, don't deem
    Drowning before you dive
    Don't care, commit
    To your self destruction drive
    I kiss the ground
    With love beyond forever
    Flip off the sky
With bleeding fingers till I die

Enemy, take one a good look at me
Eradicate what you will always be
    Tainted flesh, polluted soul
    Through a mirror I behold
    Throw a punch
    Shards bleed on the floor
    Tearing me apart but
    I don't care anymore
Should I regret or ask myself
    Are you dead yet?

    Wake up, don't cry
    Regenerate to deny
    The truth, the fiction
You live in blindfold on your eyes
    Disclosing, self loathing
This time you've gone too far
Or could it be my nemesis
    That you're me?

Enemy, take one good look at me
Eradicate what you will always be
    Tainted flesh, polluted soul
    Through a mirror I behold
    Throw a punch
    Shards bleed on the floor
    Tearing me apart but
    I don't care anymore
Should I regret or ask myself
    Are you dead yet?

    [Laiho's solo]

Enemy, take one a good look at me
Eradicate what you will always be
    Tainted flesh, polluted soul
    Through a mirror I behold
    Throw a punch
    Shards bleed the floor
    Tearing me apart but
    I don't care anymore
Should I regret or ask myself
    Are you dead yet?

    Are you dead yet?

    Lamb of God - Hourglass

    Privileged, a chosen few
Blessed with our time in hell
Witness a divine vision, the day we all fell still.
Rapture of the dying age, a shattered hourglass
Wrath of the warring gods and soon this too shall pass.

It's only getting worse, not worth a moment's regret
Each dawn another curse, every breath a twisting blade
What will be left behind in the ashes of the wake?
An ill wind blows this way, the edge of the envelope burns
Forbearance and my vengance, payment for your intent
Fear death in the wings, in thrall of those fallen from grace
Petty is as petty does, witness the mass disgrace.
God forbid you read the signs
Watch for meaning between the lines
Gehenna has now arrived, no hindsight for the blind.
Your trust has been misplaced, believed the lies told to your face
Became another casualty and now it's too late.
You finally made it home, draped in the flag that you fell for.
    And so it goes
    The ashes of the wake.

    It's only getting worse...

    Radiohead - Pyramid Song

"I jumped in the river and what did I see?
    Black-eyed angels swam with me
A moon full of stars and astral cars
All the things I used to see
All my lovers were there with me
    All my past and futures
And we all went to heaven in a little row boat
There was nothing to fear and nothing to doubt"

Lyrics are what makes a song
    #zomg#

I think complete opposite, pretty much.

Lyrics, though... I really like Sway's Pretty Ugly Husband. More of a dialogue, I suppose, but it always makes me feel uncomfortable. And it's not just the delivery of the dialogue, it's everything. Argh.

Yeah definitely, apparently the lyrics are based on a school shooting in Washington state in 1995. The kid was called Ron Brown

This Is A Fire Door Never Leave Open by The Weakerthans. Fact.

Headlights race towards the corner of the dining room.
Half illuminate a face before they disappear.
You breathe in forty years of failing to describe a feeling.
I breathe out smoke against the window, trace the letters in your name.
    Our letters sound the same;
full of all our changing that isn't change at all.
    All straight lines circle sometime.
You said "Somewhere there's a box full of replacement parts
to all the tenderness we've broken or let rust away.
Somewhere sympathy is more than just a way of leaving.
    Somewhere someone says 'I'm sorry.'
    Someone's making plans to stay."
    So tell me it's okay.
Tell me anything, or show me there's a pull,
unassailable, that will lead you there,
from the dark, alone, benevolence that you've never known,
or you knew when you were four and can't remember.
Where a small knife tears out those sloppy seams,
and the silence knows what you silence means,
and your metaphors (as mixed as you can make them)
    are linked, like days, together.
I still hear trains at night, when the wind is right.
    I remember everything, lick
and thread this string that will never mend you
or tailor more than a memory of a kitchen floor,
or the fire-door that we kept propping open.
And I love this place; the enormous sky,
and the faces, hands that I'm haunted by,
so why can't I forgive these buildings,
    these frameworks labeled "Home"?

    Not Night Drive then?

I realised earlier on that I really like the lyrics on Yesterday Went Too Soon by Feeder as well.
