Hi,
Im intrested in applying to york, for computer science/ Computer science with ai. I got 2a's in maths and ict and 2d's in further maths and economics, i have dropped further maths. As i have high ums in both maths and ict i have an a star prediction for both, and for economics i have not been informed about my prediction. I am going to retake as economics modules. Do you think i can apply to york even with the poor grades i have achieved at as?

Hi there,

You don't mention whether you're interested in the BEng/BSc programmes or the MEng programmes. Both offer single subject Computer Science, and Computer with the AI specialism.

Our A-level typical offer for our MEng four-year courses will be AAA including an A-level in Mathematics. Our A-level typical offer for our BEng/BSc three-year courses will be AAB including an A-level Mathematics. If you choose to come for an interview with one of our academic members of staff, and you perform well, we will make a variable offer that reflects your performance. This may be a drop by one grade in one A-level subject.

Whilst we do not specifically require Computing at A-level, we are delighted to accept students with this qualification and would encourage them to apply. We also recommend the new OCR or AQA GCSEs in Computer Science/Computing, as they give a grounding in the principles of Computing, though this is also not an admissions requirement to any of our degrees.

It is good to hear that you are looking to retake your Economics modules. A third A-level (or equivalent) is essential for our courses, and we would encourage you to apply if you feel that they would be able to meet our standard offer.

I hope this helps and if you have any further questions please don't hesitate to contact the Admissions Team in Computer Science on [email protected]

Thanks,

Helen

Hi

I'm looking to study history, but I'm unsure whether my A Levels are suitable.

I'm studying history, english language, and health and social care. I got As in each one at AS, and I'm predicted A star A A respectively. I'm just unsure about the suitability of A level health and social care? Would this.disadvantage my application?

Thanks for the help.

Hi I am currently about to start A2 psychology and I received a B at AS because my unit one grade was a C - I was wondering how the university feels about resits - I'll only be resitting one exam next year
Also would I be put at a disadvantage because I don't do a second science at A level?
Thanks in advance!

Hi there,

So sorry for the delayed reply.

The Department of Psychology are happy to consider resit grades, our typical offer for BSc Psychology (C800) where an applicant is undertaking one science is AAA (including one science subject) at A Level; we include Psychology, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Maths and Further Maths as science A levels. An applicant would also need Grade B in GCSE Maths.

We would be happy to consider your academic achievements fully at the time of application. In addition we will assess ability and suitability for the course applied to, skills, interests, motivation and potential as indicated in the Personal Statement and Reference. We consider all applications on an individual basis, however we are unable to advise if you would be guaranteed an offer pre-application.

I hope that helps and if you have any further questions please don't hesitate to contact us.

Thanks,

Helen

Hi there,

The Health and Social Care A Level is fine for the Department of History. Our only requirements regarding subjects are: 1) these must include either History or Classical Civilisation and 2) we do not accept General Studies or Critical Thinking as one of the 3 main A levels (though it's fine as an additional fourth subject).

From your query you look very strong and would have a very good chance of receiving an offer from us.

I hope that helps,

Helen

Hi there,

Thanks for your interest in the University of York.

History at York offers a wide range of modules, stretching chronologically from the fall of Rome to the present day and geographically to all inhabited continents (Europe, Asia, Africa, North America, Latin America - you can find details on our undergraduate page: http://www.york.ac.uk/study/undergraduate/courses/ba-history/).

We have staff who are conducting research in all of these areas, so you will be taught by experts in the field - the Department of History came second in the REF in 2014). York is also a friendly department in an accessible, safe and historic city.

I guess my overall answer is that you should visit the places you are interested in and get a sense of what you like. Where you study is a very personal decision and depends on your particular interests and preferences.

If you haven't visited the Department of History at York yet then we have two upcoming Open Days, this Saturday 19th and Monday 21st September. You can find out details here: http://www.york.ac.uk/study/undergraduate/visits/open-days/

I hope this helps,

Helen
Hello,

I am considering York as one of my choices to read English next year. I got ABBD in my AS results, with an A in English and a D in History; I dropped History for A2. I want to resit two modules out of three for Maths (I got a B) to hopefully boost my A level result to an overall A.
How does York feel about resitting exams? Is it frowned upon which could lower my chances, or is it completely disregarded?
Additionally, do you think it's worth applying to top universities with entry requirements AAA or AAB when I got ABBD at AS?

Thank you,
Megan

Hi Megan,

You would be welcome to apply for English Literature at York although we couldn't guarantee the outcome without seeing your completed UCAS form. However, I can assure you that your AS results and your decision to resit two Maths modules would not put your application at any automatic disadvantage.

I'm afraid that I cannot advise, for obvious reasons, on how other universities might view your situation. The best thing to do would be to ask them directly.

I hope this helps and we wish you well with your application. English Literature is a wonderful subject to study (especially at York!) and it will open the door to many exciting careers.

I hope this helps and if you have any other questions please don't hesitate to contact us.

Thanks,

Hi, thinking of applying to York for history. My AS's were ABB. Will the fact that I only took 3 AS's hold me back? Also, will the fact that I only got a B in history hinder me if I am still predicted an A.

Hi there,

3 A' levels is more than sufficient (as long as one of them is not General Studies or Critical Thinking). B at AS shouldn't be a problem either, as long as you are predicted AAA. ABB is quite a good result for AS - many students with those results will go on to get 3 As.

I hope this helps and if you have any further questions please don't hesitate to contact us.

Hi,
Is there a University-wide Unit/Module Catalogue?
I'm looking at the Natural Sciences degree course and cannot seem to find any more details on the course units rather than just the unit names. A module catalogue specific to Natural Sciences would be very useful, but if not a university-wide module list would do.
Thanks

Hi there!

I want to apply for the M.Sc. Global Marketing course for entry in September 2016. I have a few questions regarding the application process though and I really hope you can help me.

1) I come from Germany and the entry requirements on the website are a bit unclear regarding german grades. It says I need an equivalent to a 2:1 and for Germany it says this is a "2 or above" (so I guess everything from a 1,0 to 2,0?). I guess I am probably gonna graduate with about a 2,2 or 2,3 (both "gut"). Do I meet the requirements then regarding the grades? On other university websites it states everything up to a 2,5 is equivalent to a UK 2:1.
2) I will not have my final certificate until August and I would like to apply in March latest. I will only start writing my Bachelors thesis in April though, so I am at least lacking 12 credit points at the point of the application. Is it possible to apply at that point with a current transcript of records and an estimated final grade?

Thank you!

Hi there,

Do you know which strand of Natural Sciences that you want to study - one of the Interdisciplinary courses (i.e. Nanoscience, Biological Modelling) or one of the Specialisation courses (Biology/Chemistry/Physics)?

You can request a general Natural Sciences course booklet on this webpage: http://www.york.ac.uk/natural-sciences/contact/. However, it doesn't give you detailed information about the modules that are taught for each programme.

I'd recommend that you contact the Admissions Tutor, Dr Andy Parsons, and he will be able to give you further information about modules and the different programmes. You can contact Andy on [email protected]

Thanks,

Helen

Hi there,

From Germany, for 2016/7, we would be looking for

1st---0 to 1.5

2:1---1.5 to 2.0

2:2----2.0 to 2.5

3rd---2.51 to 3.5

Different Universities have different requirements with minimal differences, especially when it comes to postgraduate admissions.

For the 2nd question, applicants can apply even while doing their final year of their degree, and if an offer is made, it will be made conditional on getting the 2:1 [or 2:2, depending on the course] grade or equivalent. In such cases we would expect an up to date transcript from the applicant, which would either have their up to date weighted average or we would calculate it ourselves. Based on that grade, and how possible a 2:1 grade is mathematically, we would make an offer or reject accordingly.

We would advise you to apply as all applications are assessed on a case by case basis.

I hope that helps,

Hi there,

In the Department, each student has a personal supervisor who is there as a point of call for both academic queries, and for any pastoral issues. We find that students and their supervisors get to know each other really well throughout their time with us at York. This complements the University's College support system, where we have tutors and staff in all colleges who can offer you support and guidance for a range of problems. Also, the student-run Maths Society meets weekly in term time for Coffee and Calculus(!). All Maths students are welcome to attend, and it's a good opportunity for students to work collaboratively, and to get support from students in the years above.

In addition, there are the main university student support networks which include welfare support, disability support and financial support.

I hope this helps and if you have any further questions please do get in touch.

Thanks,

Helen
Hello, I'm considering applying for English Literature and my current predicted grade is IB 32, but I have hopes of bringing it up to the minimum requirement of 36. Is it still worth considering applying to York?

How much would it work against me in the case that I applied with only the minimum requirement of 36?

Is York flexible with IB students?
Hi! Im a newbie on TSR! Im now doing A2 and Im planning to apply for York Law School. My predicted grades are AAB and do you think my grades are good enough to enter York?
