Argh! The Clicking is driving me crazy!

Okay, this has been going on for over a month now. Ive got this clicking in my jaw and its driving me nuts. Whenever I move my mouth or jaw, or when I'm trying to eat I get this clicking sound near or just below my ear. Also, When I wake up my jaw feels really stiff, and the clicking is really loud when I move my jaw. The clicking doesnt stop all through the day. Ive managed to cope with it for over a month thinking it will go away, but obviously its not. So just before my last resort of going to the doctors can anyone tell me how to get rid of this and stop this really annoying clicking.

Thanks.

P.S. The clicking is not really painful, just really annoying as I can hear the clicking everytime I move my jaw.

I have a had a clicking jaw from since I was 10, mine doesn't hurt just clicks when I open my mouth wide but it can hurt after a while, mine is only on one side so not sure if we have the same type I asked my dentist and it was a choice of breaking the jaw and putting a splint in or leaving it - i'm leaving it!
He said mine clicks because my top and bottom row aren't balanced? well I hope you sort it out

The joint can become "misaligned" and cause clicking. An osteopath could probably help you. Since it wasn't there before it must have a reason such as dental treatment (a filling that is too high can cause it), or a "blocked" vertebra. It should be looked into by an orthodontist, dentist or someone like an ostepath in order to find the reason.

I had something like this, because I fell off a horse when I was little I went to my GP though sometime last year and had to have my jaw like reconnected it was actually disconnected by a small amount, I have no idea if this is the same problem but I had a clicky jaw and now it's fine. Just see your GP. ;yes;

my dentist gave me some thing to wear at night which helped for a while then annoyed me so now i dont have it. see your dentist and see if they can do anything for you.

:ditto: I had to have that as well for like a month for support.
A few months back I developed a clicky jaw. I couldn't actually open my mouth fully without having to click it open and was told I had 'Temporo Mandibular Joint' disorder. The doctors prescribed Ibuprofen which did nothing. I'm not sure if you have the same problem as me but I bought a book about it, followed the exercises in it and it went away in a few weeks.
Yeah i get this when i dont move my mouth for a long time. Maybe try every morning when you wake up, move your move all around or something? :s-smilie:
I used to get that, it seems to have stopped on its own though.

had this between about age 14-18 but not anymore. I'm guessing it was growth related.

My jaw started clicking when I was in my young teens. Just annoying clicking, which progressively got louder and more annoying. One day, when I was around 18, I was eating an apple and my jaw got stuck. I couldn't open wider, nor could I close my mouth. In the end I just had to bite down and cause a loud crack. After that, it was ok for a while, then it started dislocating/locking every now and again. I'd seen the doctor about it several times and asked to see a specialist. Took over a year to see one and he gave me a sort of mouth guard to wear at night and said that i'm probably biting down in my sleep or something.

Moral of the story is: go see a doctor and s/he may refer you to a specialist. Even if it's just annoying clicking now, it may get worse!

i've had this for at least 8 years now! I quite enjoy clicking it, although sometimes i do it a little too much and it hurts :frown: Do you ever get a grating sound too? That's not a pleasant sound at all!

I can crack mine, as though a knuckle.

It's awesome.

i have this same kinda problem with my jaw. it just kinda came on one day and was very painful because i couldnt eat things like apples properly. i saw my dentist who referred me to a doctor who said (like most things are apparently) stress related. apparently i "grind my teeth" or "clench my jaw" during sleeping hence the stiffness when i wake up. he was apparently meant to send something to my dentist to get like a kinda mouthguard to prevent that from happening but he hasnt yet... hmm i really should see where that has gone to! this was 2/3 months ago.
you probably have to live with the clicking because all they can do is break your jaw to fix it again so you will have to wear a headbrace... or you can see your dentist/doctor who will probably give you this mouthguard thing to help with the stiffness.
I have that, on and off too
