The Ribena ban is wrong - we should let people decide what they want

Simply levy a tax on sugary items that makes it worth people's while eating more healthily and worth companies' while switching to healthier sweeteners, and use it to fund the NHS, initially for diseases caused by sugar, diabetes being the first priority.

So apparently the ribena ban is only for lunchbox-sized ribenas at Tesco, and only the full sugar version. But why are they allowed to tell us what we should be eating and drinking?

Ban?

This ban isnt based of one person, its about the majority

Ah i see, so they're only banning black people from buying ribena?

So instead of sugar Ribena you make people buy aspartame Ribena? I love how stupid they think the public is:wink:

Nobody is being made to buy anything.

I'd say the public is more hysterical than it is stupid, and this thread is good evidence of that.

Keep on consuming the fecal matter of GMO E Coli Bacteria, with known cancerous side effects. I guess ignorance is bliss.

Doesnt make sense, why would they ban those and not all sugary drinks?? Not that any of them should be banned anyway, but if they are going to ban them whats the logic behind singling out this particular brand??

O rly?

"Reviews have found no association between aspartame and cancer. These reviews have looked at numerous carcinogenicity studies in animals, epidemiologic studies in humans, as well as in vitro
genotoxicity studies. These studies have found no significant evidence that aspartame causes cancer in animals, damages the genome, or causes cancer in humans at doses currently used.[8][38][41] This position is supported by multiple regulatory agencies like the FDA[58] and EFSA as well as scientific bodies such as the National Cancer Institute.[47]"

Ah the FDA probably the most corrupt organisation in the world. I am glad you are trusting of government agencies and the corporations that really control it to make sure you consume only the best:wink:

Yep. Aspartame is like vaccinations and climate change. Scientists say one thing, experts on the internet say another thing.
Isnt the sugar free one the one with more aspartame in? If so how exactly how that help, asparatame isn't exactly good for you
As for this ban, there is not ban. Just Tesco opting to not stock a particular product. They don't stock legal highs or 20 ft long Toblerones either.

And I don't even trust anything the FDA says or does. They're well known for constantly cherry-picking studies, researchers, you name it, to suit their own political agenda. Half the top bosses at the FDA work/worked for huge food companies.

There are many things that are illegal cause they are too dangerous, Many drugs are

I agree with this ban, Because many people dont know what is best for them, its why we have many other things that are banned in many parts of the world

They ban on certain illegal drugs are not because they are dangerous. If it was then a number of class A drugs would be legal like alcohol is. Drug classification is not based on harmfulness. Prohibition is much more about politics and public perception.

With all that being said part of the reason there is an obesity epidemic in this country is because of the selection available in supermarkets, as well as public knowledge and attitudes. Removing them from the shelves isn't so bad. There's plenty more on the shelves and it's a small effort in the right direction. Public knowledge and attitudes needs to change most though. It's the crap people eat for dinner that probably has the largest effect. And it is crap.

IIRC those studies show that it can cause cancer in doses far higher relative to body weight than any human could consume. Anything is going to be dangerous in such huge quantities.

What about the ESFA and National Cancer Institute?
