What were the TOP 5 things you looked for when choosing a university?

Hi TSR!

I thought that I'd ask what were your top five things that you looked for in a university?

This will help to build a guide for people in Clearing of things to consider. People in Clearing will have until 5pm before they are able to input their chosen verbal offer. Therefore it's vital for applicants to consider which uni they'd like to go to very carefully.

Thanks to all responses in advance!

1) Wanted a Campus uni in/near a city
2) Grade requirements- were they realistic?
3) Reputation- ideally didn't want to go to an ex poly
4) Course content
5) Good student union

1. Was the course suited for me.
2. Did the location feel comfortable enough to study.
3. Did the city and surrounding areas have everything I would need.
4. Was the distance comfortable enough away from home.
5. How was the course led etc.
1. Did I like the city (I'd previously went to uni and hated the city I lived in)
2. Did the course offer specialised modules in my degree rather than a more general scope. For my uni you can look online at the course catalogue and see what sorts of modules are offered for each degree, really useful stuff.
3. Did I like the university itself? I can't stress enough the importance of visiting if you have the chance, especially if you're going through clearing where your options are more limited.
4. Course reputation - does the university have a good reputation for my course?
5. Is it possible to enter into second year? This one is a bit more specialised to Scottish degrees. I'd done a HNC and some of my offers let me enter into second year, this was something that really interested me when I was applying. The university I ended up choosing didn't let me do this but it had satisfied all of the previous criteria so that's where I am

1. Is it close enough to be able to visit home easily or does it have affordable transport links? (This was important because I struggle with stress so being able to go see my family would help me deal with it)
2. Entry requirements
3. Is the city nice?
4. Reputation
5. Did I get a "good/friendly vibe" from the campus? (I don't know how to explain it, basically did I feel like I'd fit in?)

Thank you both,

I ended up writing the majority of the article yesterday, but I already included both of these! :woo:

Hopefully this will be great for those in Clearing.

1. Do they do the course I want?
2. Can I actually afford to go there?
3. What the place is like (what the atmosphere is like)
4. Grade requirements (are they realistic)
5. Option modules (are they interesting, and expansive enough)
1) What did the course modules look like?
2) Do I like the city? (ended up picking a city that I already knew really well before moving there and already loved)
3) Field work opportunities? (this uni's course has impressed with how much there is, plus you can't beat a trip to the Malaysian jungle!)
4) Reputation for environmental sciences?
5) Did it have a friendly atmosphere?
1. the course
2. the facilities (art student)
3. good ranking
4. opportunities for studying abroad
5. industry opportunities
1. Course
2. Location (Wanted to be somewhere the total opposite to the ****hole I live in :colonhash: )
3. Course prospects specific to the University
4. Life there, how it's rep was
5. Cost of living
Course content, location, financial viability, collegiate system, reputation.

Not in a specific order
1. Location (don't want to be the other side of the country from family, or groups I do where I live now, Also location meaning near to certain venues is important for the course of outdoor actiities, don't want 2 hours in a minbus to get to each practical..)
2. Support. I have a disability and loads of medical conditions so support is really important. I rejected 1 place simpley because when I went on a open day (would not arrange a seperate visit because lots of people is hard because of my disability) they basically would not do anything I currently got at college.
3. People. I had some bad experiences with important people (tutor, or like head of subject if you need them, also student services like for accomodation or finances are useful, as are if there is a doctor or nurse etc..) mainly my tutor at college, so meeting the tutors was quite important to see what their like just as a person really.
4.size of campus. partly disability related really, because I struggle with crouds so a small campus is easier-also harder to get lost at if that's a worry! and hopefully less noisy, party, alchol etc as it's not really in a city either.
5.The course, I wanted a foundation degree so if I hate it im only stuck there for 2 years not 3. Also, my subject is rare so the choice was fairly small for the course.
I only looked for prestige really.

1 Prestige
2 Supervisor
3 Funding
4 building
5 city
course content that actually interests you
opportunity for work placement/study abroad
decent city with good nightlife

don't look for prestige, that's a mug's game - by the time you graduate it could have completely changed, and interviewers don't really care about it anyway.

This is a good idea so here's what I looked for

1. The location ( this is important you can't work well if you are not happy where you are)
2. The facilitys for my course.
3. The accomdation can I live in the halls
4. The city ( this means clubs shops hangouts)
5. Communication how easy is it to get home because it's always nice got touch base nowxNd again
1. Modules - can I study what I'm interested in?
2. Reputation - is the university name worth £60/70k of debt?
3. Location
4. Accommodation / disability services
5. Teaching staff - do their academic interests match my own?
