Seems to me if you have to resort to cheap tricks like this to get in, you don't even remotely merit a place. And, unlike the X-Factor, I'd imagine the applications process is a lot more meritocratic, so, thankfully, such applicants won't get a place.
Incidentally, the print edition of today's Daily Telegraph has a different version of this article, in which they cite a comment from the Head of Undergraduate Enquiries at Oxford. She expresses a similar sentiment (a competitive application should feature passion for one's subject, not melodrama).
