Is Birmingham a good city to live in?

Valid argument but I'm pretty sure this person isn't going to University for Lord of the Rings or Resorts world? I'm pretty sure they're going to get the best education they possibly can and to enjoy living at their chosen University. With a University having an excellent reputation, great city, lower crime rate and low costs of living with better quality, what's so wrong with Birmingham?

I'm not saying Manchester is rubbish because that would be untrue, but this person is going to be considering more than just the tourist attractions. And if that's the case, Birmingham is actually pretty great.

Maybe read the thread title? We aren't discussing the university.

We are about three times the size of Manchester.

And secondly, I couldn't give a monkey's rub what the 'general consensus' is. The public are idiots. Your post is just proving my point. Do we have the nation's broadcaster creaming themselves over us? Are they based here? No we don't and no they aren't, they slag us off repeatedly. Do we have our football clubs in the Champions League? Do we have the BBC investing a reasonable amount back into our region considering the mammoth amounts we put in in terms of license fees?

That is ridiculous and disgusting.

Do not underestimate the influence of football and the BBC.

I wholeheartedly agree that the BBC needs to invest much more back into the Midlands. But it does not help that they have so much presence in MediaCity.

Umm... I did? And I did talk about the city (low crime rate, cost of living etc) but I also manged to talk about the University too instead of just slandering the City. Which the person who posted the thread might appreciate since they did say they were thinking of going to the University.
I spent a year at UoB last year in a house in Selly Oak. I'm gonna focus solely on the NEGATIVES in this post.

Selly Oak, where most student houses are (so 2nd year onwards) is pretty crap to be honest. Grimy, dirty streets with rubbish, chunder and food everywhere. Most of the houses have problems with damp and mould. There is a lot of weed and other drugs floating around with people smoking in doorways. Exclusively locals from what I saw. There is also a decent but not ridiculous amount of burglary that goes on but that's typical of any student area. The house next to mine got burgled last year. Lot's of these crimes against students are opportunistic so if you aren't stupid you should avoid most of it, dont walk around at night with earphones in for example.

Walking around in the centre late at night I don't feel safe. There are definitely some dodgy areas - Aston, Sparkbrook, Lozelles etc. One that springs to mind is near Five Ways as there are no cameras and it's near some of the university halls and a route home for some from Broad Street. Fortunately the University itself is quite far away from this due to being in Edgbaston so tends to avoid many of the mugging / head kicking in problems.

All in all if you don't do anything stupid you should be alright.

Stay away from the City Center, it looks like a scene from Fallout New Vegas.

My entertainment in university is sorted then
I'm from Birmingham... and couldn't wait to get out of the place. The local council imposes diversity and its communist, on everyone there. It shames whites into accepting their immigrant quotas.. Which the council gets paid vast amounts of money for. Also most who work in the council are landlords who claim the highest rents for the immigrants they house. The place is a hovel, still full of druggies, crime, mentally ill, immigrants from everywhere. Asians and Muslims have taken over. the whites English tummies have been bullied out and this has been enabled and supported by the council and schools. The uni is suite. I'd go to somewhere like York or Warwickshire. Even the night life in Brum, you might get beat up by a chat, a drunk thug, a gang of slappers, one of the bouncers, or a bully boy copper. Stear clear of the place. It's not for soft hearted people. Look at the riots on the YouTube vids, Asians vs whites, football fans, its a magnet for the worst of society. They set up carnivals for gay people...yet cut funding for services which help vulnerable. This is where their priorities lie. In destroying what is right... All in the name of diversity and recieving more money to spend on naff monuments. Trust me... A year in Birmingham game and you will need therapy.
Oh they are also about to house 500 Syrian families and individuals... While homelessness is through the roof there. Also every high street is full of Greg's and charity shops. It's been sold out to foreigners. Diversity it isn't... A free for all it is. This is why English patriotism is dead.
Dude Birmingham is a fine place. Go to any city and there will be lots of poverty and ethnic minorities. Night life is great, the university itself is beautiful and there are A LOT of students to socialise with.
