Do you refer to your older family members by their names?

No racism, but I've always wondered why Chinese folks give their kids Western names? At university some of my Chinese friends have traditional Chinese names on the register but prefer to be called Western names. Whats up with that?


EDIT: To answer OP's question, apart from my brother, I always refer to elders respectfully i.e. mum, dad, aunty, uncle.


That's just the way it is. In Hong Kong, 'Western' people are usually given Chinese names too.
