It's not your business though, is it? It doesn't matter where I post on TSR and what I post - make sure you concentrate on your own posts and not on mine

It's best not to reply to posts like this. I quoted you with a genuine reply which you didn't respond to, yet you are responding to these types of posts. Let's keep it on topic
Another issue we keep getting (maybe requires it's own thread) is new users joining CTAM then asking either spotify95 or me for fake ID documents!! :banghead:

Doesn't require any kind of thread - just report them :h:

The reason why I am asking this is because I have seen lots of these Korean posts across the forums. They don't seem to be appearing all of the time - however, this has been happening since about 2 months ago.

They all seem to be advertising some sort of website, usually Korean casinos etc.

The attached image depicts how the "TSR News and Feedback" section is looking at the moment. Is there any way of dealing with things like this effectively, so we can, in effect, stop these spammers from even signing up to the site? It gets a bit tiring having to report every time I see a spam post like this.

You have more to worry about when your CPU is running at 77 Celsius

Okay I won't respond, maybe he was trying to be funny?

I haven't forgotten about your post, dont worry! :h:

I understand it's annoying, trust me I have to bin the damn things, but getting worked up over it isn't going to help. This is not something TSR has control of or condones, it's from an outside source and we're just as annoyed by them as you are. Even if there is no solution right now, CT are still finding ways to reduce it and, one day (soon I hope), it will stop. Try and focus on more important threads like when users really need our help if they are thinking about ending their life - we need to get a little perspective and prioritise here. So please just don't let this get to you, it doesn't solve anything

Thanks for the message  I wish that we could actually stop these spammers, but it seems like they just keep on coming over here to spam. Looking on Google suggests that other websites are no longer affected by the spam as much as we are. Hopefully the CT can do something about it. Even doing what I suggested earlier on in this thread, i.e. putting a filter in place to stop korean symbols, would then only affect the IL rather than having lots of spam affect the whole of the forums. Or having the filter enabled everywhere except the IL would clear most of the site's spam and would only result in spammers able to spam the IL - and people in the IL could still report such spam threads.

Let's hope we can find a solution soon - thank you for the effort you make around the site and I am very appreciative of your help and binning of such threads. :h:

I've discussed the CPU thing before in threads in the Techno/Computers area, and on other forums. It's my laptop having overheating issues - issues which are very common on the Aspire 5742s.

Let's get back on topic now, shall we?

That's also very annoying. A bit like the impostors that we had. Lets hope the issue goes away by itself, otherwise I'll have to go to ACT to sort it out.

Users are allowed to post in foreign languages outside of the IL as long as they provide a translation though - so this would be restrictive to other forums, not just the IL. However, as a short term plan, it could work. I can't imagine users post using these symbols often, so getting caught in the filter now and then would be a little bit extra work, for the sake of all of the spam that would be prevented on the public site. It depends what CT think.

There's no reason to take it to AtCT, just report it.

This. The less time CT spend in AtCT on fairly unnecessary threads, the more time they have to deal with reports and these spam threads

I have been reporting the things but unfortunately every few days the same person comes back to discuss the illegal document thingy.

However I have been reporting virtually every issue that I have - I only go to ACT as a last resort.

It's just that, like the impostor issue I used to have, these people are bothering me every few days about something that they know isn't allowed on the site. It's another way of derailing the counting threads.

I don't try and waste the CT's time with pointless threads :nah:

Out of all the time I have spent in TSR though, I haven't seen many people at all (if any!) post using foreign languages outside of the IL, unless they are spammers. And of course the rule is that you have to get an English translation for any foreign post outside of the IL, so if people are getting English translations then why don't they just post in English?

And yeah as you said if a genuine post did get caught in the symbols filter then it wouldn't take long for the CT to go into the mod queue and find the post in question (to put it into the public forums). As I said previously the only foreign language posts we tend to see outside of the International lounge are the Korean Spammers.

So report whenever they come back - making a thread in AtCT won't change how it's dealt with, or mean the CT can do anything more. Whilst it's certainly not something we allow on site, it's also not something that needs a thread; if anything, making a thread on it will be slower than reporting anyway.

Islam Society and Foreign Language Study Help, just off the top of my head. And that's without actually exploring the site further. As for posting in English, that's a whole other argument

It could work on a short term basis, yeah - but they'd find a way around the filter in the same way that people have found a way around the mod queue for links posted by new members.

a) I'm not a member of the Islam Society, however do societies have their own little private posting thingy or is there a thread (or set of threads) for each society? Because if there are threads for societies then maybe those threads could be put on the ignore list?
b) Is Foreign Language study help just a branch off of the regular study help or is it an entirely different section?
edit: Aah I see now Foreign Language is a branch of study help so maybe that branch off could also be removed from the filter? As I haven't ever seen any spam threads in that section. So they're both two sections that I don't normally post in. Hence why I hadn't heard of them!

I think that the posting in English thing wouldn't help especially if people in the IL or FL Study Help are trying to learn a new language. But anyway, lets hope this gts resolved once and for all :yep:

Thanks for the help - they came back again this evening and I reported the material via the report facility. Yes I agree with you that usually, when I have to raise something via ACT, it takes longer than a normal report; hence why I only use ACT for very complex issues that require more of an in depth look.

I don't think a filter would help as much as you seem to expect, really. I mean, we still get the kitchen spam as they've found a way around the filter for links - we need a more long term solution, as a filter would only stop them until they found a way around it.

But a filter on the Korean symbols etc would mean that they then wouldn't be able to post in Korean, so they'd have to be posting in English. And then it'd twig as spam instantly so they'd probably stop spamming (as everyone would know the content wouldn't make much sense).

I haven't seen much kitchen spam around recently, when was the last kitchen spam thread posted? And in what subsection?

Or they could just post in another language, or some other way around it - assuming they actually could add Korean symbols to the filter, without having to add every single one. I appreciate the spam is immensely frustrating, and it is for us too. But if it was as simple as just adding a bit of a filter, that definitely would have been implemented by now.

Been around in Chat/FG/IY from what I remember. It just gets cleared up quickly

1) In which case the filter could be set up to block all foreign symbols, so that would cause the spam to stop. We have, in the past, has Chinese characters in spam threads too, so that would stop those as well.

2) That's a point, is it actually possible to add all of the Korean alphabet to the spam filter? If so then it could be implemented, though I'm not fluent in Korean so wouldn't know how much work this would take.

3) I haven't popped into IY for a while but I am almost always in Chat/FG and none of the kitchen spam pops up there. Though why would they advertise kitchens here, most students don't even need to buy kitchens as they are already provided by accommodation or parents?
