What is a foundation degree????

I missed my grades abit to get into my first choice (psychology and criminology at ntu), however manchester met has offered me a 4 year foundation degree in psychology. Has anyone done this before? if so what is the foundation year like? also will there be a chance for me to do more work towards the criminology side in my 2nd year?
