Re: Westminster School? Do I stand a good chance?I think I misunderstood between Westminster School and Westminster University. ^^ Thank you very much for your help though.(Original post by talkaholic96)
Meodien I think application for 2012 entry has closed because I am applying for 2013 and that opens soon
Have a look on the website you can put your birth date in and they tell you which year you should apply to the school
My mistake. Thank you anyway. xD(Original post by Ralphyboy)
I think you are talking about Westminster University. This thread is about Westminster School, a private school. -
Re: Westminster School? Do I stand a good chance?Thank you - this has helped me so much. I will still have to decide on which history to take but as for English I have to get cracking reading some books! Same goes for art history - I have have no time at the moment.(Original post by deadpinkfluffycat)
We were given a passage from Barnaby Rudge to analyse last year. For English. Twas nice.
I actually think it was what got me to the interviews.
I see that you're uncertain whether to take history or art history - my advice is to pick whichever you have more interest in, something you'd find yourself reading up on when you're free. I was talking to someone who took the paper (art history) and she said that they asked her personal opinion on a piece of art, asking her to compare it to something she'd seen before in a gallery. Or something like that.
How were the interviews?
What sort of questions did they ask for English & the general interview?
Thanks again

It sounds annoyingly obscure when I say this, but you just have to write well. Improve on your writing, not your reading.
Let me try explain this without sounding horribly arrogant:
When we did our mocks in January, my class had already done all the poems/set texts in class, and so were fully prepared. My problem was that I missed about a month of school during the first term, which was when we did most of the poetry. So, I should have been screwed.
Why wasn't I? Earlier last year, my teacher gave me a never-before-seen poem and asked me to analyse it immediately. He gave me about a minute to prepare for this, and then we discussed it.
Since then, I've been getting A*s in my essays.
I can't say why really, but I'd like to believe that my teacher added a layer to my way of analysis.
What happens now, is that I write whatever I feel. Say First Love, by John Clare? I can write an essay describing it as completely negative and dark, or I could analyse it to be the happiest poem in the world. Basically, I'm very good at impromptu.
Be good at impromptu. That would be a good idea.
Oh, close analysis helps. Every single full stop means something, every 'a' or 'e' has an ulterior meaning.
Ultimately, my point is that you don't actually have to "start cracking on books."
Um. In the interview, I was given an Auden poem to discuss. You can steer the conversation however you like really, but in mine we then compared it to the text I wrote about in the exam. I also talked about Gatsby, because I like The Great Gatsby. -
Re: Westminster School? Do I stand a good chance?Same , I am so excited I wish it was December already - then we would know if we got in!!!(Original post by athenachuanght)

Good Luck Everyone! From what I remember, no one went without their parent or guardian. You have to book it though and you will get tickets. -
Re: Westminster School? Do I stand a good chance?Meh. If I was in year 10 I would have done more than that but shamefully I got disillusioned and sadly I went to a state school - just shows how **** this education system is.(Original post by Rukia)
Heya~dunno if any of u goes there~
I am a girl so i guess I wont stand a better chance of getting in (?)
My current grades are 6 A*s(triple science, mandarin, RE, Maths), 3 As (Geography, music, english lit), 3Bs (history, French and English lang). I have also got Cambridge certificates in Latin. I am in year10 at the moment. I don't know what my predicted grades are yet ^^
Do I hav any posibility of getting into Westminster ?
I plan to do French, further Maths (I hav done GCSE maths already nd I am doing AS maths now - the GCSE exam is scheduled for the end of yr 10 (this year) and the AS one is scheduled for the end of yr 11), the three sciences, critical thinking for VIth form
Thnx everybody~
Honestly looking back it's just a waste of potential. -
Re: Westminster School? Do I stand a good chance?
Hey. I'm currently in year 10, and planning on applying to Westminster for 2013 entry.
I am predicted to receive approximately 7 A*'s, 2 A's and a B for my final GCSE results. I hope to study English literature, Drama, History and French for A level.
I come from a pretty awful state school in North London, and my parents would not be able to afford the full fees (I plan to apply for a day scholar place).
Any information on if my grades are good enough for a place at Westminster, what those particular subject entrance exams are like and what sort of bursaries I can hope to apply for? Thanks.

Re: Westminster School? Do I stand a good chance?
Westminster specifies a minimum of 6 x A grade GCSEs, so your projected results would not concern them. They'll be more interested in seeing how you perform in exams and interviews.
The school contrives to give the impression that it issues lots of bursaries but I am not so sure that is they case. They certainly seem to have a problem helping out the less well off middle class type parents (in my family's experience). If you come from a less privileged background and go to a poor school and they really want you, however, I would say there a pretty decent chance they would help. If you look back over the pages of this thread you'll see posts from people who applied recently who got full bursaries. It is possible, so why not try.
With regard to the exams - there have been some quite full details posted about history and English. Drama I gather is quite "creative". With French be aware the standard at the school is pretty high and they may be looking for someone with a bit more knowledge of the language than is required just at GCSE. If you get past the exams, the ability to speak the language well in your interview would definitely help, the language people I spoke to told me.Last edited by fikaneda3; 08-05-2012 at 15:07.
