Earth Science vs Geophysics??

It depends what you want to do with your degree.
A survey was once done by the AAPG across the UK, America and Canada, showing that oil companies vastly preferred graduates with "Geoscience" degrees rather than Geophysics or Geology. I am assuming that Earth Sciences is just a different name for Geoscience, and thus in terms of undergrad prospects, a broader Earth Sciences qualification would trump a Geology or Geophysics qualification.

I'd have thought that Geoscience = Geology, not Earth Sciences. There are some Universities in the UK that do offer degrees with "Geoscience" in the name and these seem to be more similar to straight Geology degrees than Earth Science degrees.

No, they are two different things. In America anyway.
Guys, this study is most definitely out of date now, but I would be surprised if the gist of it didn't stand.

I would have to disagree there,

geophysics degrees (well, at least mine) offer a broader range of skills e.g. programming in MATLAB, UNIX environments, Python etc, better development of maths ability and problem solving, whilst still teaching all of the fundamental geological skills, field mapping, basic rock/mineral identification in lab and field, structural geology.

Geophysics degrees (especially due to the modules I have chosen) is specialist and specific to skills required for employment, i.e exploration, data modelling and lots of report writing!

OP and @Plagioclase, Google 'RSK Geophysics' and click the top link. They are a mid-size consultancy company that hire graduate geophysicists. On their home page, look under the header 'Techniques'. These techniques are what you will/should study as part of exploration/environmental geophysics.

Liverpool. Ask away if you need any questions answered.

Hi, which course are you taking in Liverpool? I have an unconditional letter for Msc in Petroleum Reservoir Geosicence in Liverpool and Exploration Geophysics in Leeds. which one do you think is better?

Hello.

If you end up in Liverpool, you'll meet me  What is your undergraduate degree? To answer the question, Geophysics
I'm also interested in the MSc at Leeds however..

Would you be able to refine your question? Better in terms of what?

Hi!!! It'd be great to meet you.

I am a Geophysicist from Mexico, both programmes look great! I can't decide which one to choose, I wanna work in the oil industry, any recommendation?

A lot of our graduates at Liverpool get hired by companies such as Shell, BP etc and they come back every year for 'networking'. Also, geophysics companies hire too.

If both courses appeal to you, it's down to where you'd want to live for the year. Both cities are amazing. I personally (since I've lived in Liverpool for a while now) would go to Leeds. The geology/geophysics department here are exceptional though. They're really passionate, always make time for you and you'll get to know them on a first name basis.

Wow, thanks for the information! You know much about Liverpool, do you work in the university?

Something I was worriedabout Liverpool is that the programme seems to be made for geologist, is it right? It seems there isn’t much geophysics in the programme and in the university.

And sth I was worried about Leeds is that all courses look like my major in Mexico, as it last 5 years.

That’s why it’s so difficult to choose.

5 years?! could you link me to the course?

I mean, my major in geophysics last 5 years, in UK only 3 or 4 right?

The msc Exploration geophysics in Leeds is only one year but similar courses to the ones I've taken

Ahh sorry I thought you meant the masters was 5 years.

Yes the Liverpool masters is more geology orientated where as the Leeds one is geophys.

Can anyone help me to decide between Earth Science and Geophysics?
I'm just starting A2 year soon so I need to write a personal statement pretty soon.
If I apply for Earth Sciences I could apply to some unis I really like the look of and would love to apply for (st Andrews, Durham, maybe Oxford) but if I apply for Geophysics then I'm not such a fan of the unis that offer the course (although there is the added bonus of a year abroad offered).
However, I would prefer to study geophys even though the two courses are pretty similar.
So any advice? A course I slightly prefer but a uni I don't like as much? Or a uni I really like with a course I don't like quite as much? Help!

You have 5 choices, so if you can't decide by then I'd apply to both, and maybe apply to universities that do both courses. In your first year, most universities teach the same modules to all geoscience degree programmes and you can change your degree programme after the first year if you change your mind!

Just to add as well, I'm not entirely sure but I don't think there's too much difference between Earth Science and Geology - I think ES just has slightly more emphasis on climate/environment/atmospheric sciences?

For your personal statement there's no problem with writing it for both courses, just write about why you want to study ES and add that you are especially interested in geophysics - most geophysics degrees will still have a large amount of geology in anyway

I suggest you go to as many open days as you can for the unis/courses you want to do, and choose places that feel right/departments that feel right/courses that most interest you - then once you have your offers go to the applicant days to make sure that it's right for you

I can send you my personal statement as an example if you want since my offer is now unconditional anyway. My personal statement was unashamedly targeted at Oxford but I honestly described my interests in the Earth Sciences which mainly involves the physics side, so I addressed all the courses. I don't think it's difficult to apply to Earth Sciences and Geophysics courses since the latter is simply a part of the former (it's not like trying to write a PS for Medicine and Chemistry, or Biology and Chemistry). As long as it's clear that your main interests are with the physical sciences whilst you appreciate the holistic nature of the Earth Sciences, you'll be fine. I had two interviews for straight-Geophysics and both were very happy with what I said.

Hi could u possible send me ur personal statement, so i could see examples of extra curriculars. Thank you

That post is 6 years old, I'm afraid I don't have a copy of it any more!
