Health check for dentistry students

Researching dentistry, I discovered that universities ask that you undergo a health check before you are accepted onto the course to find conditions that could affect your ability to work within the profession and to screen blood-born diseases such as HIV. I was just wondering exactly what this health check involves? Do you have to go to them or can you have it done at your local GP's? Are there any extra vaccinations you have to get? Does it cost anything? I'm not great with needles, but I will have them if I have to but I'm absolutely terrified of having a blood test (I'm not good with pain or discomfort of any kind!)
