It seems that they are lumping the university fee and the college fee together and giving you just the one figure this year (composition fee). But the college fee is a LOT more than your figure.

(I prefer the figures to be together, to be honest - I'm a part-time student, only get into college occasionally and that's mainly to help out with something - I just don't want to know how much it costs per visit!)

Thank you - I just looked at the fee for my MPhil and figured that's what I'd pay. Then I thought there was extra for college membership and was like 'erm - didn't budget for that'.

Not that they're likely to take me anyway.

I'm confused, one of the college websites I was looking at implied that the college fee is an extra £5000 or so on top of the £9/10,000 course fees, is this not the case?

Entirely possible whatever college you looked at hasn't updated its page to take account of the new combined fee structure. Just be thankful you don't have to pay international fees.

The composition fee is the fee I looked at - then I thought it was extra for the college. I budgeted for composition fee and living. But now I'm worried it'll be extra.

When I went for an interview they gave me an approximate figure which was less than the composition fee stated. But didn't mention how much the college fee was.

Confusing.
If anyone has general questions (or something related to biosciences applicants) feel free to PM or ask me on this thread :yy:

Did you read the links I gave in the post you responded to? The first clearly states that the composition fee includes both tuition and college fees.

"University Composition Fee: a payment made via your College to the University to cover the cost of your education and your college membership."

Yup! I'm just a worrier.
On the application form Cambridge asks whether I have made applications to any other institutions this year. Is this normal? And am I at a disadvantage if I provide them with the names of the other courses and their respective institutions I have applied to (or will apply to)?

I put mine down. I think it says on the guidance it won't prejudice your application - I saw it as a positive question, shows you're serious about postgrad'.

Has anyone heard back yet? I don't know if things are done on a rolling basis or they wait until all the applications are in.

Actually just found out my course is done on a rolling basis! Scary!

They only care about it insofar as they can infer the probability of you taking up any offer you might be made, which helps them plan. No impact on the chances of you getting an offer.

Hi everyone,

I'm an international student, currently have strong 1st in Maths, applying for ISMM.

Any tips for Gates Cambridge Scholarship Personal Statement? Any examples of successful applications or any guidelines would be super helpful. And who would you guys recommend as a personal referee? I've used my personal tutor as a 1st academic referee for the application itself and plan to use my most recent employer as a personal referee for a scholarship, but don't know if it's the best use of resources. Never really applied before but those fees made me scary!

Also, how do I know if my course is filled on a rolling basis? Contact an alumni?

Can't help with the first part but for the latter, I contacted the department directly. You may contact an alumnus if you know one, but I doubt they'll be able to give you much information on this.

Do you perhaps know if the same person can write both academic reference for the postgraduate application itself and personal reference for scholarship?

P.S. I believe you can based on this:

So the question now is if it makes your application weaker?

I'm sorry but I really don't know the answer to this. If you can't find your answer here, perhaps ask in the 2015 thread. There will be plenty of information on funding and scholarship there. Alternatively, directly message someone from that thread .

From my anecdotal experience with the Gates, I believe having an academic write your personal reference would make the application weaker. The Gates prizes 'leadership', so if you're only able to provide an academic referee they see it as you not being very involved with things outside your academic world (of course this can be & often is a totally false assumption on their part, but they get so many applicants they have to discriminate somehow). If possible I would try & get a non-academic to write the personal reference.
