Is it socially acceptable to speak your native language in a foreign country?

Well, no it's not. Going on holiday and speaking English with your English friend is like going on holiday and speaking English with your English friend.

Choosing to move to another country and refusing to learn the native tongue is like moving to another country and refusing to learn the native tongue.

That's not what I said. They should obv know the native language. I am saying it would be stupid if they had to speak English between themselves though.

I agree. We should all form our own cultural conclaves, only learn our own languages, and only speak to people who are 'like us.'

Well done for pointing out what I didn't say, have a gold star.

You're right, I did do that. I apologise.

It's largely a result of being misrepresented and berated throughout this entire thread. Nonetheless, not an excuse.

No, it's a real shame migrants are coming to this country and calling the host culture 'ungrateful' and 'spoilt', based on a few interactions.

Again, if you want to be here, if you want to contribute, if you want to learn the native tongue then guess what? Welcome!

Otherwise, if you're simply here to bitch, moan, berate and insult the host culture...there's the door.

So you practically forbid me to express my experience, which fits perfectly the happening above?

And at the same time you believe you are civilised.....

Meanwhile, did Romanians give you the same reaction why you didn't speak proper Romanian? I am curious you know...

No, this is the UK, you're free to do whatever the hell you like. Wear a banana hammock and run down Downing St. for all I care.

What you are peeved about is the fact that I won't sit here and accept your right to come to another country, enjoy all of the privileges of living in that country, and berate the native population. You can say it, I sure as hell won't like it though.

You don't have a right to not be offended. I have every right to stand up for my own culture. Don't like it? Not my problem.

I don't mean to be rude but this is a stupid question.

OF COURSE it's okay for people to speak their native tounge in British-society. Who are we to force them to speak English? It's not going to split society that's just an excuse racist people make. I just don't understand the problem with people speaking other languages? Like how are we in any shape or form harmed by them not speaking english? We should be embarrassed that we only being able to speak english and not putting in the effort to learn about other languages and cultures like most countries are doing.

No, no, no, no.

You didn't answer.

Did Romanians give you a bad and nasty reaction why you didn't know their language as a native speaker.

Please tell me.

Then may be we can discuss why do you believe everybody around the world has obligation to speak your language as native. Also why you give people offences about their level of language if you are jealous or in bad mood.

At the same time you don't speak any other language (the common case).

I cannot ask any English speaking person on any street to give me directions in my language. Is that offensive to me? make a guess....

1. No other countries are doing that. Multiculturalism is only a burden for 15% of the world's population. You live here, you've become consumed by European culture. It's not global culture, a great deal of the world hates the west, we import people into our country who hate the west, hell we even them tell the culture which has spawned that hatred is equally valuable as western culture. Most nations the world over aren't multicultural.

2. No-one is forcing anyone to speak English. The question is whether people should learn English when they live in British society. Many choose not to.

3. That's the 4th false accusation of racism. Yet another TSR poster who is contributing to a narrative which cloaks child molestation and grooming gangs.

4. Why the hell should I feel compelled to learn another language? How about we export 2.7 million British residents to Islamabad and tell the native population to learn English to help us assimilate into their society? Odds on that happening? Non-existent. Yet, not only should it happen in British society, it's deemed 'racist' if it doesn't.

British society, amongst the very young at least, is nothing more than institutionalised self-loathing of British culture.

Uh... yeah it's fine for people to spea whatever language they want.

The only case where this is rude is when - and this happened to me in uni halls - you walk into the kitchen and there's your flatmate and her friend and they are both speaking Chinese when it's the three of you in the kitchen. Its not OK to speak a foreign language if there is someone else with you who doesnt speak that language because you are excluding them. Its just bad manners. So it was ok for them to speak Chinese amongs them when they were alone but when I walk into the kitchen and they are excluding me, thats rude and annoying. All three of us are in England all three of us can speak English so yeah. I would never do that.

Ah I have misinterpreted the question then. Also, I completelt agree with all your points we are on the same level
I still don't have answer TheCitizenAct.

Let me please know did Romanians give you nasty reaction why you didn't speak good level of Romanian.

Lets get started....

1. I didn't live in Romania. I went for a week and a half.
2. My hotel flooded, well the bottom floor. We got in a massive argument with the person at the reception desk. He wasn't polite.
3. You expect English people to learn Bulgarian to help you assimilate? By that logic, I expect to be able to speak English in Bulgaria and anyone who doesn't speak to me in English will have offended me (perhaps they're xenophobic?).

Most of them dont speak very good English and dont seem very confident in English but the problem is, if they never try, they will never learn. Tbh I have met lots of foreign students at uni who are very bad at English (seen their coursework as well, really poor grammar) and I dont understand why the language requirements to get in arent higher. I guess unis are hungry for the cash so they dont really care.

So you claim you went to Romania not knowing the language? who knows ...maybe you went there to emigrate.....how they should know?

And they did speak to you in English and saved you? and you (of course...) couldn't speak proper native Romanian?

How rude.....

Tell me again English speakers are not arrogant....

They just want money. Teaching standards are a joke. Chinese students always stick with each other, never socialising with anybody of another nationality. They're the only group that does that and it's weird and insular.

As you can see - that was my living example ...I speak your language, you don't speak mine....

What here is still keeping you unhappy........

I am about how ungrateful British people are about their own language and the other nationalities learning it - and you proved it in the face of everybody else here.

Truly, you don't deserve my sympathy.......excuse me......

Uh-huh. You win at the internet, too.

Because, clearly, going to a country on holiday for 10 days is precisely the same, exactly the same, as going to live in a country for a prolonged period of time, choosing to study there for years on end or even choosing to live there permanently.

You are also right about politeness. It totally wouldn't be impolite and a rather massive insult if I did choose to go and live in Romania, refuse to learn the native language and spent my time insulting the entirety of the native population.

You got me. Have a gold star.

Rude to you? Absolutely. I will be rude to every single migrant who comes here and insults my culture and my way of life and argues that they have a right to not be offended. As I said before: if you don't like us, there's the f*****g door.

So you believe it is politeness of people around you to speak your language?

And you didn't speak Chinese when meeting these Chinese people?

PS: I hope English speakers will take into account that they do look impolite when other nationalities around expect them to speak in their own language - in order to be polite to them.

So much about the British politeness.

Thank you all for the attention.

Oh seriously, sort out your priorities.
It's pathetic really.

I can't even be bothered to deign this with a response addressing each point you made, at the moment.
Most of what you said speaks fluent cow three times over.

I'm serious; you have a problem, and you should be close to calling therapy, if you can't get it under control by yourself.

I'm not discrediting all of what you say, because you do bring up some (I don't use that word lightly) valid points.

Are you deliberately interpreting things wrong?
