No, I think you're perfectly right. One of the fundamentals of a relationship is trust. It sounds like the relationship is perfect from your perspective but he doesn't trust you completely for whatever reason. Have you spoken to him about your concerns?

You are not wrong for feeling like this. He seems, I hate to use the word, very clingy due to his insecurities. You sound like you are being very supportive of him despite all this, which is great and hopefully will mean you can work through this together. It would help to talk to him if you haven't done already so he sees your side of things. Don't be afraid to bring up issues with him, because he should understand that it is for the best that everything is sorted out and your relationship can continue through your time at university.
