People hang out, socialising and drinking and talking to new people and getting to know them. You share a common interest and thus begin talking and meet new people.

May I ask what 'scare' stories I am spreading, exactly?

Yes they do that and its all wonderful, but I don't see how that is "socialising through drinking". A lot of them won't be drinking, but they will still be socialising the same as everyone else. Drinking is not instrumental to the activity.

These are social events for both drinkers and non-drinkers alike. You appear to be suggesting that non-drinkers would not be welcome or comfortable at these events, which could actually not be further from the truth.

Yeah I'm not doing that £50 because half of events are clubbing and partying and as a Muslim I can't do that - we're thinking of planning a meal or cinema or bowling

I'll probably be in this scenario because I have no passport and it's really awkward trying to get an ID quickly without one when you moved over summer and have nobody nearby who's known you long enough to verify your application.
