    Ucl
I went to a "So you want to be a doctor?" careers conference at UCL on Saturday, it was a good day and made me realise that I will definitely be applying to UCL in October. Before I hadn't even considered any London unis but actually going there has changed my mind

Anyway...I sent an email to the admissions people asking for an application form for the open day to which they replied with "yes we'll be sending one in the post shortly." The thing is, I checked the UCL website earlier and it says that the open day is now fully booked Do you think that's based on the number of booking forms they've sent out or the number of booking forms they've received?

    Basically, I'm rather gutted

Anyone else going to the open day? If so do you fancy giving me your ticket :p:

Rather pointless thread I know but I haven't been on TSR for so long.

The lecture had nothing to do with UCL, it was organised by "epoc careers conferences" or something. Dr Brenda Cross gave a speech though which I found really useful and quite amusing! Anyway I haven't actually received a booking form so I doubt I'll have a chance And I REALLY wanted to go to it.

Don'tworry these things will not have any effect at all on your chances :p:. If you're desperate to see the place, I'm sure you can look around some time...

    quote the website -

'Anyone who wants to know more about the medical profession from the insider's point of view'
....although I would ask why you couldnt get an insider's point of view from talking to a doctor in a hospital for free?

'Everyone who wants a future in this profession'
which is a non-sensical 'room filler' statement, since plenty who dont go get a future in medicine.

'People who are unsure whether to study medicine or not'
ok, but you'd still be much better informed getting a real insider's view from a doctor for free.

'All 'A' level students who need career help'
    use your careers advisor?
I would venture that anyone turning up to this isnt trying to decide on medicine, but falsely perceive that turning up will advantage their application.

'AS / A2 and GCSE students. You never know what 'A' level subjects to choose at GCSE stage and this conference will help a lot.'
or you could use the university website for free? lol - ludicrous...

'Prospective students who are searching for the truth about the profession and keen to broaden their knowledge'
    another non sequiter. see above.

all in all, a load of bull.
Although at £76, at least its not as bull as medsim.
It sounds much more like a venture to pull in applicants to ucl's departments, and possibly even plug the gaping debts that the university are currently in.

Oooh, I barely would have given it a look if it was for free! Screw that then!

    Here's an idea. ..

Unless you particularly want to help UCL dig its way out of its deficit, go to the University of London open day. Its free, and you will get to visit UCL and hear an admissions tutor for nothing. And their advice is actually excellent there.
And the other medical schools send there staff down too, so thats a bonus for not a penny spent.

Thats not to say you wont hear bull there as well, but at least its free bull, and theres a lot of useful information you get to savour too.

Yeah I guess...it's the only open day for the medical school though. Ah well I'll just have to get over it :p:

Congratulations on your offer by the way! How I hope that'll be me this time next year

Always nice to meet a progressive UCL student, thanks, Phil.

The Open Day, thats the event to go to as well.

If you miss the UCL Open Day, then the University of London Open Day is in August or September sometime I think.
Check out their website for an update....

My advice would be to skip Portsmouth. I would also advise you walk from Portsmouth city centre to Southsea centre. A little exercise never hurt anyone
