wow this whole medical affair is not looking good even though medicine is one of the highest professions in the world.

Anyway in unis do they give like education allowance because in college right now I hear people getting something called EMA and was wondering if uni do something like that if so whats the criteria and how much?

When you go to uni, you're entitled to:
1. A loan to cover your tuition fees - currently £3000 per year
2. A loan for living expenses - around £3000 per year
3. A maintenance grant - up to £3000 per year

Obviously, the loans have to be repaid, but the maintenance grant doesn't.
The loans are available to all.
However to get the maintenance grant in full you have to have a household income below about £20,000. If your household income is between that and about £33,000 then you will be entitled to a smaller maintenance grant. Above £33,000 and you don't get anything. Even if the people earning money in your household don't ever give you any money:rolleyes:

Your final year's tuition fees are paid for you (by the NHS?)

Also, normally if you get the maintenance grant or part of it, your uni will give you a bit extra typically about £1,000 per year

Good summary. Just to add:

Is the loan for living expenses still means tested? I'm old system but have always got more than £3,000 a year & quite a bit more this year (term length?).

On 6 year courses it's your 5th & 6th year where fees are currently paid - so intercalating doesn't cost more in tuition. There's also a means-tested NHS bursary available in 5th & 6th years in addition to loans - again not sure how this will work under the new system though, with maintenance grants.

This is something that varies with universities, so might be a consideration when choosing although all should provide something. At mine for people coming in under the new system if you get all of the maintenance grant (~ household income £0-£17,500) it's £4,000 in year 1, £3,000 pa thereafter - decreasing on a sliding scale up to household incomes of £37,425.

You go to Oxford or Cambridge by any chance Elles?
Might explain the huge university grants

Oxford. I applied under the old system where the Opportunity Bursaries weren't sliding scale.
But thinking that it would be significantly cheaper than my insurance was a consideration in decision making (=college accomodation for 5/6 years, awesome libraries and collegiate level book/equipment/elective grants/prizes/scholarships & hardship funds).
Looks like I'm set for lots of maintenance grant then! Which is a point? When are we supposed to start applying for it. In my old 6th form there was a whole assembly about it, but at this college they've said nowt.

your 4th and 5th years' tuition fees are paid for by the NHS aren't they?
Reply 28
No. just your 5th. Or 5th and 6th if you intercalate.

The reason for this is that you're only entitled to 4 years of full student support. So after 4 years, I think the NHS step in to carry on providing support.

It's for this reason that you only pay for the first year of a GEP (coz you would have used 3 years student support on your first degree and you have a year's worth left for the first year of the GEP)

So why do people always jump to the conclusions that 'you want to be a doctor for money' when someone enquires about doctor's salary. Isn't it normal to asks for a profession's salary if you aspiring to be one. So why are doctors any different?
If you don't agree with me, you can qualify as a doctor, work for charity and live on benefits. I for one, like the work of a doctor but also want to earn big bucks for the services I offer!
Asks yourself why health professionals get furious about small pay rises? Is it because they went in just for the money??? Medicine isnt highly paid in comparison to the nature of the job. So medical extremists/fanatics or radicals should allow these questions to be asked!

Whe some one comes on the forum and says they've just started thinking about medicine as a career then say "the one query" they have is what the salary is - it says something about their priorities. How about asking what the pros and cons are or how long the training is etc...

^^^My comments weren't directed at you, but to the many people who find it wrong for someone to enquire about doctor's pay.
Training and the pros and cons could be easily researched over the net. The pay however cannot! Its too complex to find the take home pay because several factors such as clinical excellence and working non-social hours contribute to the base pay.
It is only too natural to enquire about pay when researching a career. Letting yourself into a career without knowing the pay is completely absurd. What if it was unpaid!
Apologies if my previous post sounded personal
I already said that it's fair enough to ask. So it's not everyone

Most people think if you ask about the salary of a doctor that you straightaway wanna do it because of the money. Like it or not, we all wanna live a comfortable life.

As an international, you can't stay in the UK for specialist training anymore - recent high court ruling... We'll you can apply for jobs, but only if there are no suitable home or EU candidates...
