Re: TSR Mature Students' Society!!!York gave me an offer for Maths, but I ended up going to Reading instead. Nice to know I'm not the only maths student here though.(Original post by Tiggsie)
Hi all
I'll be heading to York in just over a months time to study maths. Anyone else heading up there?

How old are people on here?
I see some are early twenties, I am 21 and didn't know I qualified for "mature student"! -
Re: TSR Mature Students' Society!!!Don't feel old... I started my BA in Psychology at the age of 41. I'm more than half way done. After graduation I'll apply for Master's programmes while my husband finishes up his Ph.D at Leicester.(Original post by Headspace)
Well at the ripe old age of 39 I changed course and went for psychology (applied) which I'll be studying a BSc honours for 3 years, then perhaps a MSc masters for a year.. then perhaps a 3 year PhD! Eek! I'll be 46 if I do all of that.. so we'll see quite how 'mature' i am once qualified! lol -
Re: TSR Mature Students' Society!!!Thanks so much for the reassurance, i was wondering if it would prevent me getting onto a masters or PhD but hopefully not. I know it 'should' be ok but you never know.(Original post by MorgansBard)

What masters are you going to apply to? Is your hubby doing a psych PhD?
I start next week so I'm getting excited - although haven't had my student finance sorted yet, i've applied it's just late.
So not their fault.

You really are never too old.
Lots of luck. -

I am hoping to apply to Leicester - my husband's Ph.D research is in Archaeology. He's a mature student and was accepted without a problem, so I don't see age as a factor. If anything it should be a positive reflection in that you are more settled and less likely to be out partying all night. You're also more focused and better able to work unsupervised for longer periods of time.
Eventually I want to work with individuals with gender issues, crisis intervention and adult survivors. To be licensed in the states or admited to the royal society in Britain requires the higher degree.
Good luck. If you'd like someone to chat with, just let me know. -
Re: TSR Mature Students' Society!!!Thank you it does help. How exciting for you! Hope you enjoy both courses, and the future is bright for sure.(Original post by Ces_ca)

Re: TSR Mature Students' Society!!!Bet Archaeology is amazing, my husband would enjoy that area of study, he's around for our children now though so has said he may consider something in the future but just not yet as he knows it supports me knowing he's there for them after school / if their off sick.(Original post by MorgansBard)

Your chosen area of work sounds very rewarding, I have just finished volunteering in an acute unit it was very rewarding and one patient who moved me the most had gender issues along with confusion over transgender operations etc. Very interesting but also moving.
I am able to add modules of study to my degree and plan to add criminology along with social policy. I'm considering education and Welsh as I'm in Wales but am not Welsh so need to expand my language skills.
Having had my student finance approved today I'm over the moon and feels wonderful to have no hurdles between starting.
I'm always up for chatting more - you may have noticed!
It's great to have support and someone to talk to that understands what page you're on.

Re: TSR Mature Students' Society!!!
Hi guys,
Sorry if Its been asked a thousand times, but at what age are you classed as a mature student?
I'm 22. Just finished an undergrad and taking a year out hoping to apply to courses for commencment in september 2012.
Would i be able to apply as a mature student? I didnt do that well in my undergrad so I'm not really confident about my masters applications
Just looking at all my options at the moment ad wondering if mature stuent is one of them? -
Re: TSR Mature Students' Society!!!hey mike, welcome aboard!(Original post by MikeBray)
Hi people, I am hoping to return to education but am completely at a loss as to how to go about applying to the Uni's considering I lack the "formal qualifications" they specify. Hoping somebody may have some advice for me?
My name is Mike by the way
that's quite an open ended brief you've got there but, if we take that you don't have any formal quals your easiest option is possibly the Access course.
Usually Access courses takes 9mths, so an academic year, and depending on what u want to do (science/social science/humanities etc) and what the local institutions offer u can make your decisions on how best to go forward.
but i'd start by establishing what degreeu wish to study (cos that lets u know what quals u will need, since not everyone likes Access) and then contact your local colleges to see about gettin on the relevant course.

So not their fault.
