HMRC Graduate Tax Specialist Programme 2016

For those of you already working at HMRC, did you have to go through background checks/references as part of your TSP application?

Also, at the end of the TSP, are candidates automatically promoted to G7 positions, or will an application need to be made?
a) Yes, and some of them happened a little bit hairily at the last minute.

b) Promotion to the grade is automatic (a big plus against how the Civil Service fast stream has been in the past at least), though of course there will be a process for placing you into a vacancy.

Edit: What have people been told about the training? I'm interested to hear about the changes people have been talking about here!

Thanks, two more questions...

Could you elaborate on what you mean by process?

At the end of the TSP when you are promoted, do you continue to work at the same office or is it common for people to be relocated to different offices at that point?
Well there'll be a group of people that have qualified as G7s, and a bunch of vacancies, so there'll need to be some kind of method for matching one to the other. I don't know what it is at the moment (too far ahead to worry about!), and I guess that in 4 years time it could have changed anyway.

I suspect the answer to your second question will be different in future to what it has been in the past. In the past there were lots of small offices with trainees so there was a bigger chance of moving around. In the future there will only be the larger offices located in the cities that you have been recruited to, one of the purposes of which was so that career progression could take place all on the one site.
Anyone else got O grade officer in London? Would be nice to know if we will be together maybe.

I'm in the same boat!
I got O offer in london as well
Why does HMRC offer two different salaries for the same role (minimum and maximum salaries)? As an applicant from outside of HMRC will I always be on the minimum salary?

The minimum and the maximum give you the pay range for the grade. All staff at that grade will be paid within the range. In the last it's been the case that you'd move through the range towards the maximum the longer you were in the grade, but after years of pay restraint, many are on or only just above the minimum unless you've been in the grade for years. We've got further pay restraint until at least 2020, so it's likely pay for new entrants will remain around the minimum but there are small annual increases.

Everyone external starts on the minimum. Any existing civil servants moving from any other departments can have their salary honoured if within the limit. If their salary is higher than the maximum, then they just get the maximum.

The yearly pay increase of 1% doesn't mean much as the salary minimums and maximums go up 1% too so you're constantly on the minimum lol

Hi there, I have been quietly observing this thread for any updates. I have the same grade and location provisional offer as you. Although I feel it is highly unlikely that everyone will be together from the get go due to the number of offices in London.

However the planned closures over the next few years may mean the whole family unites in one Death Star eventually.

Like most here I am anxiously waiting for the outcome for the pre employment checks and possible start date.

May the For....titude be with you for these pre employment checks or accommodation of notice periods.

I noticed you made the first post for the latest TSP in 09/15.... it has been a long journey hasnt it!

All the best.

Sorry for the late reply. It took about 3-4 weeks, I'm not sure precisely. Also, I've been made a formal offer now as well, about 2 weeks after my pre employment checks were done which should give an approximate timescale.

Yes, I only got to stage two. I know, that does bother me a bit to be honest but I mean it's a good graduate job with decent pay so I'm not gonna look this gift horse in the mouth haha. Hope they've got back to you now.

Afraid not, no news yet. I feel it's going to be a long wait. Seem to be plenty of us with provisional offers for Belfast so I'm not alone in my boat. Good luck
Has anyone been offered an O Role in Newcastle? If so, have you had your pre-employment checks completed and do you have a start date? I'm starting to worry as I need to give notice to my current job!
Hey has anyone who was offered a provisional offer for an O grade received a start date (after their pre employment checks were completed)? If so would you mind telling me when the start date is (I.e. Is it dependant on when they give you a formal offer). Many thanks

I got a provisional offer on August 16 for London. I am still waiting for pre employment checks but not sure if I need to go through any as I am now internal. I am hoping we will be based in Stratford Jubilee House. Surely the formal offer should be made by end of September or am I being too optimistic?

i got my offer same date, but in Birmingham. usually pre employment checks take up to 20 working days, however not sure about this one. i'm internal to its illogical we have to go through checks, but anyways i think end of sept latest should be enough time for them to complete checks and issue formal offers. getting so stressed
