The 90% is Cambridge, not Oxford. Cambridge have mande many offers this year conditional upon getting 90% in certain subjects, rather than just an A, but Oxford doesn't do this. At least not yet. There is talk of Oxford asking for UMS grades next year, but AFAIK nothing's set yet, and even if they did it would be as a factor, not as a cut-off.
Really? I only know a few people with Cambridge offers but there's are just normal AAA offers....

A guy in my maths class has a 90% offer from St.Johns Cambridge for economics.

(The 90% he has to get is in maths)

it's just you mentioned "i really have a passion for economics and am aiming to do this at oxford," but nothing about the other half of the course? why do you want to do e&m as opposed to PPE, or straight econ at another uni?

    Re: Economics and Management (oxford)
yes you're right. well, im more geared towards economics than anything else to be perfectly honest, but i like the extra skills that management would give me. combine this with the fact that we did some business management work on the economics summer school at warwick and this is why E and M sounds like what i want to do. I think that i will apply to straight economics courses at other universities such as LSE however i dont want to do PPE because i dont really have a passion for politics and although it is a degree i had considered, just doesnt seem like something i would enjoy relative to E and M, however i do see your point..

    Depends on college.

I just think it's a bit disingenuous to be madly passionate about economics like you are, and then apply to a university that doesn't offer straight Econ. It just seems like LSE/Cambridge/UCL have courses better suited to your passion.

Meanwhile I understand Oxford is just one of several places you'd apply to, and applying to E&M doesn't stop you applying to economics at LSE.

The Oxford website clearly states that for E&M Mathematics is strongly recommended, not Economics. I know a girl in Oxford now who didn't do Economics at AS or A-Level, and still got in. She just did a little bit of background reading.

yes - Alevel maths is very important for 1st year E&M - i'm not sure too many people (if any?) get in without it. the reason ALevel econ isn't necessary is because uni Economics has very little crossover. Sure, it's nice to have and you have to turn up to interviews with a reasonable understanding of a few key concepts but Maths is far more important.

    Re: Economics and Management (oxford)
I understand where the OP is coming from.
I really do love Economics and I want to apply for E&M at Oxford, though I will be applying to the LSE for straight economics...I do similar extra curricular activites, and I am Finance Director in a YE team, and I'm doing the 2.0 challenge next year.
I don't know exactly why I prefer Oxford, but somewhere, Drogue said the management side shows you how the economic theory is applied to the real world. I like the way Oxford teaches/lectures compared to say the LSE.
    Just thought I'd mention it...

The management side is really very useful career-wise also. A lot of recruiters I've spoken to have commented on how its valued and how even upon employment it has aided them in terms of career progression.

Further Maths for Eco and Management
Do Oxford, prefer students who have Further Maths to A-level for Economics and Management

    Out of interest, what college?

The stronger E&M colleges really do strongly prefer Further Maths, and you'll find it difficult to get into any College with a B at AS. I'm not saying it's impossible, I'm just being realistic.

Well, wouldn't a candidate also have problems answering many of the topic-related questions at the interview?

Re: E&M with a poor economics AS performance
No. The questions on the test and at interview require logic. Admittedly having thought about economic issues is a huge help, but having done A level economics won't be of great help. It will help a little, but an interest and some wider reading is more important.
