AQA GCSE English Language Grade boundary calculations.

I'm really confused on how the grade boundaries link between the controlled assessments and exams. Usually, the grade boundaries for my controlled assessments is are 90% for an A* but, the grade boundaries for the exams are around 71%, how do they calculate your overall grade.

You're getting confused between UMS marks and raw marks. For UMS, it's always 90% for the A*, 80% for the A etc. whereas it can vary for raw marks. You can find out more information regarding UMS here: http://www.aqa.org.uk/exams-administration/about-results/uniform-mark-scale
