Applying for Law in England and Scotland

Hi

I am planning on applying for law this year. As my choices are both in England and Scotland and they both have a slightly different legal system.... is it okay to refer to UK law in my application... as I can refer to english or scots law on their own... can I?
Whats your advice? do u guys think it really matters?

If you refer to UK law. you run the risk of admissions tutors thinking that you do not know that the law is different across the border. Most lawyers in practice would seek confirmation from a specialist in the other jurisdiction. Can you not just refer to "law" in your personal statement?

yes i tried to refer to law in general... but my statement tends to focus more on english law ... I think i just leave it like that it should be fine ... hopefully

Sure - get your school/college to look at your personal statement carefully, particularly on this point. A slight focus on English law might be OK if you are applying from England?

Why are you referring to English or Scottish law in your statement anyway? Is it actually relevant to mention which type of law you're going to be studying - I can't imagine a sentence or paragraph where it would be, to be honest. I bet you could just remove the mention of 'English' or 'UK' and it would still be fine.

Ok
Oh dear!
Not at all, you are right to raise the point.

If school is no help, then are there any lawyers that you know well enough to ask whether they would look over your personal statement? Most people like to be asked to help others just starting out..(but don't put your draft online).

I don't know whether that would be a good option or not. Have a look on this thread:

@interrobang gives lots of useful advice on that forum.

You realise that if you do a Scottish law degree that you can't do postgrad courses to qualify in England?
