PGDE Applications 2016 (Scotland)

Hi guys,

I can't seem to find a thread for this year's applicants (for 2016 entry) for PGDE courses in Scotland.
Anyone else applying? I'm based in Edinburgh so would ideally like to stay here, but I know how competitive it is. It would be for teaching Maths in secondary schools
I have a meeting with our careers service at the university this week and hopefully will send off my application by the end of the week.

Hi,

Yeah most of the threads seem to be for the PGCE on TSR! I'm applying for the PGDE in English for 2016 entry, but like you I'm worried about how competitive the course is! What other universities are you applying for? How did you get on with your application?

Best of luck with your application and I hope you get into Edinburgh!
Hi!

I'm in Scotland (Dumfries) and will have to travel to do the PGDE. I am applying for primary and am applying to Strathclyde, Hamilton UWS, Glasgow uni and Ayr UWS.....annoyingly there is a UWS campus in Dumfries but it doesn't do the PGDE. I have a young family (I'm 35 so pretty late in deciding to finally apply - I'm a graphic designer at the moment) so am hoping to drive on uni days and get my placements in Dumfries and Galloway.

I'm currently in a placement in a primary school doing 2 and a half days a week spread out across a few year groups and I'm hoping to keep that going for the rest of this school year. It has been MASSIVELY helpful already and I am 100% sure I'm doing the right thing in pursuing a teaching career. I've also just started studying for my National 5 maths to top up my maths score. I'm almost done filling in my application but I need to wait for a replacement degree certificate coming through as I lost my original and I'm still battling with my PS......it's definitely proving difficult!

Hi!

I'm applying for PDGE Primary, just waiting on my reference and then I'll be sending off, hopefully by the end of this week if they can get it done by then!
Hey, I'm looking to apply for the PGDE Business Education. As I work full time it is difficult to get the time to arrange school work experience. Does anyone know if there is a specific amount you need to have? So far I have shadowed for two full days in a local secondary school. I am also intending to work as a youth worker or do some volunteering of that nature. How is everyone else getting on?

I would really like to stay in Edinburgh, but will be applying to Glasgow and Strathclyde too, and not 100% sure on the last two! How about you?

I'm also quite worried that my experience won't be enough. I have worked as a Course Assistant before, but it was with Masters students, and I am a Resident Assistant at the university accommodation too,but again that's working with students and not children. I am involved in our department's open days which children attend occasionally, and the Maths outreach team that runs weekend workshops for children but not sure if that's enough. I'm currently taking a course at uni called Maths Education and this will involve us running a masterclass to S5 students and actually going into a school and teaching P6/P7 pupils but that's not until October/November time!
I'll be asking the careers service about this today so hopefully they will be able to advise and give me an idea on the amount of work experience a typical applicant has. I'll let you know how I get on!
Hi, I'm actually looking to apply in 2016 for intake August 2017. I'm undecided on whether to go for Primary or Secondary (History w/ Modern Studies). For those who have (or are currently getting) classroom experience, how did you go about organising it? I'm hoping to get something set up for starting in January. I'm also wondering about the PVG scheme. Their website doesn't make it very clear how to go about actually applying for the scheme - could any kind soul shed some light on this for me? Do I need to do this prior to organising class experience and if so how do I do it?

Hi! I just picked the school I thought would be best (one of the biggest, with a nursery and special need unit attached) as I felt I would get a good wide range of experience there and got to speak to the headmaster and told him I would like to volunteer and he bit my hand off! They told they didn't need a PVG (but I don't know if that would be the case in every school as my children actually go to this school which probably helped a bit). It turned out I had just had my PVG done for applying for an ANA job so they got a copy anyway. If the school requires it then they may be able to shed some light into how to go about it.

I do volunteer for 2 and a half days every week and have asked if I can stay for the whole year (I"m lucky as I'm self employed so can work round my job to fit it in) and the school are really grateful to have that much help. They were really keen to help me out as they said that teachers are really needed at the moment. The experience I am getting is invaluable, I'm learning so so much at the moment.

I would start by phoning some schools, explaining your situation and see who says yes! Ask them about the PVG too. As you aren't sure whether to follow the primary or secondary route yet I would get some experience in both. They'll be completely different from each other and you'll need both to make an informed decision.

Ahh! Went to see my careers advisor today and she did agree that I might not have quite enough classroom experience. On the other hand, she thought it's best to send out your application ASAP so thought it might be enough if I outline all the experience I am about to have as a part of my Maths Education course - but that's not until the end of October! Going to speak to my Maths Ed lecturer after class tomorrow, while looking up schools/people to email about possible work shadowing just now... The lady seemed to think that even going to speak to teachers is better than nothing, even if not followed by actual classroom experience.
Stressing out!
Don't stress too much! I emailed a few schools and managed to get a couple of days experience within a matter of weeks. As I work full time I've only got limited annual leave to take and I won't be able to take anymore until after the new year so won't be able to do more school experience til then! I did see a thread from 2015 applications and saw that one girl only did a small amount of experience and still got a place! Until I can get more time to do school experience I will volunteer with youth clubs etc which still involves working with kids.

Good luck! I'm hoping to apply to Glasgow, Edinburgh, Aberdeen and Strathclyde.

In case anyone was wondering about how much school experience is required, I found this statement on the FAQs for undergraduates on the University of Glasgow site. I'm assuming most universities would look for a similar amount, but it gives an idea of the absolute minimum they would expect:

"During the selection process we would expect to see some evidence of a candidates experience of working with school-aged children. This could include youth clubs, sports clubs, school trips, classroom assistance or teacher observation.
For applicants to the Undergraduate and PGDE Primary programmes we would expect evidence of at least two weeks spent in a Primary School (preferably a Scottish School).
For Secondary we would expect to see a minimum of two days experience working with a teacher of the subject you wish to qualify in."

The website also has some more useful info about applying for the PGDE, both secondary and primary if anyone is interested. The link is:

Hey
I'm also applying this year for the primary teaching PGDE. I applied last year and got interviews and a place at Glasgow, but withdrew and decided to spend a year in Canada as an Au Pair.
Really hoping to get a place again this year - also kinds counting on Unis letting me do Skype interviews!
I sent my application away two weeks ago to UWS (both campuses) Glasgow and Strathclyde. Have so far had a confirmation email from UWS and that's it!

This is really really helpful, thank you! I have emailed my former school (in Scotland) to ask about a shadowing experience, they have been really helpful in the past so I am hoping that they will be able to help me out with this too. And emailing a number of schools in Edinburgh

Massive congratulations on getting a place! What is it that made you go for primary vs secondary? I'm just curious, I'm applying for secondary  Also, any tips on the interview process (which is still so far away I probably shouldn't be thinking about it), was it quite tough?
In the past I've heard people had essay writing, group exercises, as well as a traditional interview on the day.

Thank you so much for the response, it helps a lot! The main thing that's throwing me off is on the Gov website for Teaching in Scotland it says re: gaining experience:

- 'In order to work with children in a school, you will need to become a member of the Protection of Vulnerable Groups Scheme (PVG Scheme) and you will need to do this before being allowed in the school.'

But the Disclosure Scotland site (and the example form they have there) seems to suggest it needs to be completed along with the employer. All a bit strange and confusing.

Anyway, I'll check with individual schools to see, as I'm sure they've dealt with this plenty of times for others who were in the same situation.

Thanks! Just hoping and praying that I get a place again this year, even with having to do Skype interviews! I went for primary because personally - I have learned through experience - I just prefer working with that age of children. Also, my undergrad is in psychology so I don't think I could specialise in a subject!
In terms of interviews there's no harm in thinking of them just now! I only went to my Strathclyde and Glasgow interviews last year because I got a place at Glasgow so just withdrew the rest of my choices. Glasgow was a group interview, an individual interview and a written task. Strath was a written task and individual interview. The interviews were pretty relaxed and the questions all pretty similar!
Do applications have to be in for January? I'm applying to Strathclyde to do PGDE in business studies. Would have liked to apply to Glasgow uni yoo but I'm missing credits on accounting from uni which would mean having to find a top up course to do. Thankfully Stratclyde said my qualifications are fine. I've looked at Aberdeen but not a place I would like to be based. It's a shame Edinburgh don't offer the PGDE business studies.
Hi All..... ive created a facebook group if you want to share ideas, interview tips etc

I can't seem to find the group...

Also, I spoke to someone from Moray House School of Education (Edinburgh) today. She said that if a candidate doesn't have relevant classroom experience with their target year group then they normally reject them straight away, no interview. She also said that they have 15 places for secondary teaching in Maths (I don't know about other subjects). Then she said they didn't even fill them all last year - which obviously was a huge shock to me! Until she said it wasn't due to lack of applicants... They had plenty, but rejected all but 13 or something. So yeah.
Ive just started it... you should get it under PGDE Scotland

Let me know if you stillbcant get it.

I'm applying to Aberdeen, Glasgow, Strathclyde, Edinburgh and Dundee for Primary. I've gotten absolutely nowhere though with getting classroom experience so won't be able to submit my application until I find some. I've contacted every school in my area and have either been ignored or rejected. So annoying!
