Where should I study filmmaking? )

My dream is to be a screenwriter and a director, but I don't know where should I study. I am thinking of some film schools instead of unis, but there is a huge selection and I can't really decide. I am a foreigner (but EU) student. It would be the best to go to the UK. I thought Met has really good course options for undergraduates, but then I've read some reviews and changed my mind....

I'm looking for a school where it's possible to combine the courses (as I've mentioned I want to study both directing and screenwriting) and there's a friendly atmosphere, too. (So you study in small groups or something.)

I know sometimes it's said that you don't have to go and study filmmaking, at least not if you're undergraduate, but I want to try anyways....

So which school could you recommend?

Thanks for helping!
Check out UCA (University for the Creative Arts). Personally, I didn't like it because I wanted the whole uni experience and it was just too small and I want to be in a big city. At UCA, you can choose to specialise in Directing and Screenwriting in the Film Production BA. It's a nice campus in a town in South England called Farnham.

AUB (Arts University Bournemouth) is fantastic. I know lots of people who study Film Production there. Great facilities, beautiful campus, great graduate employment rates. Open day next week end- Can't wait:biggrin:

Good luck my friend:smile:

Hi Alex0101,

Hope you don't mind me chipping in as I saw you'd mentioned us! We have a few different courses that you might be interested in, which you can have a look at on our website.

The best way to find out about a uni is to go to an Open Day. We've got some coming up, so you can have a look at the dates here. Unis are all so different, and you'll know when you visit whether you think it's right for you or not. We're right next to AUB, but our courses are very different. Perhaps give us both a visit if you can! If you want to know what it's like to be a BU student, you could check out our student blogs and vlogs, and we'd love you to join us on Facebook too.

Hopefully one of our students will be around on TSR to tell you what our media courses are like, but in the meantime just let me know if you have any questions.

Best of luck with your search!

Hi Katie, thanks for the reply and the links! I'm actually attending an open day on the 24th, so will be checking the uni out pretty soon!

I've a question, a couple actually  : Is the open day a self-guided tour or how does it work?, and do you have time to check out more than one subject area during the open day?

Thanks again, Alex

I am going to the Bournemouth open day on the 24th. Went to AUB this weekend and it was pretty good. Obviously, I won't know which is better till i've seen both xD I would say that the industry links at AUB aren't as good as at Bournemouth. (as much as i've seen online for BU).

At the Bournemouth Open day I would totally recommend taking some time out to check out the town- spent the evening at the beach after the open day at AUB and it was glorious! xD

Best of luck:smile:

Hi Alex,

That's great to hear that you'll be joining us! There'll be some lovely student ambassadors on hand to give you a campus tour, and they run throughout the day. There'll also be talks you can go to (we'll send you a timetable nearer the time) about courses, student life, finance etc.

You're more than welcome to check out more than one course - you'll just need to look at when the course talks are on and plan your day. We'll have staff from the courses on hand too, so you can go and chat about the difference between courses, or anything that you didn't pick up in the talks. If you're stuck between two courses, this might be a good time to ask for some advice.

And I agree with RadioBlaBla - have a look at our town while you're here!

I'll be around in Poole House somewhere, so come and have a chat with me or one of my colleagues if you think of any more questions! (I'll have a name badge on!)

See you in a couple of weeks!

See you in a couple of weeks! Let me know if you've got any questions before our Open Day, or if you have any afterwards. It's great to hear that you're doing some brilliant research on the unis you're interested in, they're all so different! Let me know what you think once you've visited us.

Hello
Not a personal recommendation but I was considering Filmmaking myself a while ago and my Film Studies teacher had a very high opinion of Falmouth so it's worth checking out!

Hiya!

Wanted to just say thanks for checking Met out! Like the others in the thread, I think it's definitely important to visit open days and see the school for yourself. We have an open day in December, where you get the chance to speak to students and graduates to get an idea of their experience at the school first hand.
We also have practical workshops that open day attendees take part in, so you get a taster of what to expect from the course, as well as having a fun introduction to the practical side of the industry. Tutors will also be there to help with any questions (one of them is a TV Director, so would be helpful to you I guess if you wanted to get advice on Directing as a career) : http://www.metfilmschool.ac.uk/opendays/

Hope this helps and if you have any questions then let me know, I'll be happy to help
